GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Volleyball team fell to the Fairmont State Falcons this evening 3-0 inside the Waco Center to begin Mountain East Conference play. The Falcons 46 kills to the Pioneers 37 proved to be crucial in the sweep.
The first set started out even as both teams traded punches to 6-6. GSU built a small two-point lead but Fairmont answered back mightily, scoring five unanswered points to take their own lead. Glenville bounced back to tie it, however FSU used another run of five unanswered to pull away from the Pioneers, taking the first set 25-17.
After FSU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second set, Glenville scored five-straight on a pair of Rita Kelly kills and errors by the Falcons. The Pioneers were able to hold the lead until Fairmont found their groove, earning a 15-13 lead. A quick Pioneer surge made it interesting but FSU held on to win set two 25-21.
Set three saw an identical score in favor of the Falcons once again. FSU rushed out to a 16-7 lead and were strong to the finish, taking the last set 25-21 to complete the sweep.
The Final Stats
Rita Kelly led the Pioneers in kills with 12 as she was the only Pioneer with double-digit kills. Sarah Grainger averaged just over 10 assists per set with her 31 total assists. Grainger (16), Lindsay Winkler (12) and Morgan Stephenson (10) all closed out the night with 10 or more digs.
Joey Borelle had 12 kills followed up by Ellie Zuro's 10. Jianna Bouarouy led the squad with 24 assists and Kelsie Dangerfield also had double-digit assists with 13. Josie Skinn finished with 21 digs in the win.
