GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Soccer team picked up their first win over a MEC Southern Division opponent this evening with a 1-0 victory against West Virginia Wesleyan at Morris Stadium. The Pioneers fired off double-digit shots again, racking 10 shots with nine being on goal.
1st Half
Merel Smets had the first two shots on goal, having one at the 13th minute and 18th minute but the Bobcats goalie Paige Miller corralled a save in both attempts. Miller then picked up another save close to the 19-minute mark on a shot from Sofia Hernandez. WVWC fired their first shot of the game at the 20th minute as Abigail Morales kept it tied at zero. Morales then picked up back-to-back saves at the 32-minute mark.
At the 35th minute, Merel Smets connected on a runner for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Following Smets' goal, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
2nd Half
With the one goal advantage, GSU played conservate, keeping the ball away from Wesleyan. The Bobcats weren't able to get a single shot off in the half compared the Pioneers four shots. Time ran out on WVWC at the end as Glenville won 1-0.
The Final Stats
Merel Smets had the goal for the Pioneers while also tying for the most shots on goal (3) with Hannah Hill. Abigail Morales had four saves in the win.
Paloma Zamora led the Bobcats with two shots on goal. WVWC played two different goalies, led by Paige Miller's five saves.
