Preview: Men’s Basketball Ready for New Week, Matchups with Frostburg State and Fairmont State Ahead

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball has a new week ahead of them, finally returning to the Waco Center tomorrow (Jan. 31) after a three-game road trip to square off with Frostburg State. On Saturday (Feb. 3), the Pioneers will travel to rival Fairmont State. GSU defeated Frostburg State earlier in the season on the road, however they were defeated by Fairmont State at home in December.

THE OPPONENTS 
FROSTBURG STATE 

The Bobcats enter (2-16, 2-9 MEC) and have lost their last four games, including a pair of 15+ point losses last week. 

Zack Thomsen is in his first season as Head Coach of the Bobcats. Thomsen came to Frostburg State after spending the last seven seasons as HC at the State University of New York at Delhi. In those seven seasons, Thomsen amassed 123 victories and helped lead SUNY Delhi to a successful transition from NAIA to NCAA Division III with an NCAA Tournament bid last season. He has MEC ties as he was an assistant at Shepherd during their time in the MEC.   

Logan Lewis (13.0 PPG) and JayShaun Freeman (10.9 PPG) lead FSU in scoring while Koby Baptiste is leading the rebound efforts at 6.4 RPG while averaging 7.3 PPG. Jaylon Johnson and Jaylin Albury both have 1.7 APG to top the team leaderboard in assists. 

FAIRMONT STATE 
The Falcons come in (14-4, 7-4 MEC) and are winners of their last four games. FSU will matchup with Concord on Wednesday prior to meeting with the Pioneers. 

Tim Koenig is in his fifth season leading the Fairmont State MBB program. Last season, Koenig led the Falcons to their fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance after going 24-8, which was the most wins since the 2016-17 team that was a national runner-up. Koenig was the 2019 MEC Coach of the Year and came to Fairmont State after spending six seasons as HC at Notre Dame College.   

David Jolinder (15.5 PPG) and Zyon Dobbs (15.3 PPG) lead the Falcons in scoring. Cameron Whiteside (14.8 PPG) and Tommy Williams (13.6 PPG) are also averaging double figures. Dobbs leads the team in assists at 4.4 APG and Seth Younkin is first on the squad in rebounding at 7.5 RPG. 

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE
 
The Pioneers are (9-9, 5-6 MEC) after finishing their road trip with three losses to a trio of the league's top teams.  

Three Pioneers are averaging 13 or more PPG in Dominiq Penn (13.7 PPG), Jordan Turbo Smith (13.5 PPG) and Devin Collins (13.2 PPG). Collins is pulling down 5.8 RPG to lead the team and Smith dishes out 4.4 APG, which is first on the team. Offensively, Jay Scott is adding 9.6 PPG and Prince Mosengo is scoring 8.1 PPG to aid the offense.
