Pioneers Capture First Conference Win in Five Sets at Davis & Elkins

Elkins, W.Va. – The Glenville State Volleyball team won a five-set thriller on the road against Davis & Elkins tonight, capturing their first conference win of the 2024 season.

Glenville State won the first set 25-19, however the Senators took the next two sets (25-16, 25-19), forcing the Pioneers to win set four to force a winner take all fifth set. GSU set the tone early in the fourth set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Pioneers continued to handle the set in the early portion with an 11-4 lead, however the Senators would claw back to make it a 22-19 game, but the Pioneers settled down and won the last three points to win set four by a score of 25-19. The Pioneers controlled the first-to-fifteen fifth set early as well, pushing their lead to 6-2 early before the Senators would close the gap making it 11-9 Pioneers late, but Keliegh Chrisman and Rita Kelly came up clutch, securing the Pioneer victory, 15-10 in the set and 3-2 in the match.

Davis & Elkins
Reanne Debose's 17 kills led the Senators, while Clara Caralt finished with 13 and Melisa Ozsar 11. Haylie Marumoto put together an impressive 44 assists and 18 digs, leading the squad in both categories. Gracjana Rozanska tallied four blocks at the net in the loss.

Glenville State
The Pioneers offensive attack was paced by Chrisman and Kelly with 18 and 16 kills respectively. Sadie Hill was providing quality passes, racking up 36 assists and Bryanne Tustin scored six service aces. Morgan Stephenson was active on defense with 14 digs with Hill also chipping in 14. Greta Petofi added three blocks in the win.

Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers will return home for another conference matchup on Friday night (Oct. 4) against West Virginia Wesleyan, with first set slated for 7 p.m. inside the Waco Center.
