Pioneers Have Historic Day at MEC Championship

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Glenville State Cross Country teams had an historic day at the Mountain East Conference Championship today, as the women placed 5th (preseason #9) in the 6k and the men 6th (preseason #7) in the 8k. This is the highest finish for the women since 1993 and in the MEC.

"Four years ago, we started out on a journey to have a sustainable distance program, and through some ups and downs, today showed that we have arrived" said Head Coach Dan Meyers.

ALL-CONFERENCE
Natalie Barr placed 6th to take home All-MEC First Team (first since 1988)
Patrick Reilly was 13th, garnering All-MEC Second Team

MEC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Reilly's stellar freshman campaign was rewarded with MEC Freshman of the Year, the league announced following the race.

The Women
Barr's 6th place finish came from her finish of 22:48. Jenna Barnett was a top 30 finisher, crossing the line at 24:26 to take 29th place. Abby Dixon (24:58, 35th) and Katie Hicks (25:03, 37th) followed not too far behind Barnett. Savannah Cunningham was 48th with a time of 26:23 while Hannah Rowan (26:36, 52nd) nearly missed out on a top 50 finish. Kamryn Armstrong (29:58, 76th) and Sara Lowe (33:47, 82nd) rounded out the finishers for the Pioneers.

The Men
Reilly's 13th place finish with a time of 26:01 was the highest placement of any freshman in the field and the highest of a Pioneer male since GSU joined the Mountain East Conference. Nick Pitchford was top 30 at #30, crossing at 27:13. Jackson Mallett (28:08, 44th) and Bryan Utt (28:23, 49th) were top 50 finishers for the Pioneers. Dylan Blackshire was not too far behind, placing 58th with a time of 28:41. Isaac Slater (29:19, 68th), Daniel Kargol (29:58, 72nd), Cameron Maurer (30:45, 79th), Caden Davis (30:51, 80th) and Elijah Armes (32:07, 85th) were the final finishers.

Coach Meyers finished with - "Very thankful for our seniors who have been through a lot with us, and to all the newcomers to believe we could make the biggest improvements in the league."
