Volleyball Downed by Hilltoppers

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The Glenville State Volleyball team fell in three sets on the road against the Hilltoppers of West Liberty Friday night.

The first set began with a WLU 5-0 run, though the Pioneers would eventually cut into the deficit and make it a 12-11 match in favor of the Hilltoppers. However, GSU could not get any closer in set one as WLU would pull away, winning set one, 25-16. Set two got away from the Pioneers from the start as they would fall behind 14-6, but could not gain much traction for a comeback, losing set two, 25-16. Set three followed the same script as the Pioneers trailed early on, but after a kill by Deniz Selen-Yazar in the middle portion of the set, it became a 18-15 Hilltopper lead. GSU lost seven of the next eight points, ultimately losing set three, 25-16, and the match, 3-0.

Ashley Cudnik led the Hilltopper attack as she recorded 13 kills in the game with Dakoda Keni leading the team is assists with 23. Defensively, Kudnik had six blocks while Liv McAtee had four and Kyia White tallied seven digs.

Glenville State
Rita Kelly paced the Pioneer offense with 12 kills on the night and Deniz Selen-Yazar recorded seven, with Malerie Ross tallying six. The Pioneers leading setter all year, Sadie Hill, continued setting up teammates as she had 31 assists in the game. Defensively on the back line, Morgan Stephenson and Isabella Bailey both had seven digs on the night, while at the net, Greta Petofi chipped in with a solo block.

Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers will continue their Northern W.Va. swing with a match in Wheeling against the Cardinals of Wheeling University on Saturday. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside the McDonough Center.
