Women's Soccer Sweep Season Series with 3-0 Win at Davis & Elkins

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Women's Soccer team picked up their seventh overall win and fourth MEC victory earlier today, defeating Davis & Elkins, 3-0, on the road. 

1st Half
In the first half, the Pioneers started off slow but eventually scored the first goal of the game at the 32-minute mark thanks to Merel Smets. The Pioneers didn't let up as they kept the pressure on the Senators, scoring another goal at the 37-minute mark courtesy of Marcelle Stoller giving them a 2-0 lead over the Senators in the first half. The Pioneers outshot the Senators by seven shots in the half.

2nd Half
In the second half, the Pioneers looked to keep their lead over the Senators and secure the win. The Senators managed to get three shots in the second half but couldn't manage to find the back of the net. The Pioneers were able to get five shots in the half with one of them finding the back of the next off the foot of Merel Smets, giving her two goals in the game and a 3-0 victory over Davis & Elkins.

Andrea Stanziola led the Senators in shots with three in today's game. Rylie Galterio had the Senators only shot on goal. The goalie for Davis & Elkins, Monica Birkelund, managed to gather seven saves in her best efforts to slow down the Pioneers offense.

Glenville State
Glenville State's all-time goal leader, Merel Smets, added to her record today with two goals. Aitana Viejo had the Pioneers only assist in the win. Smets also led the Pioneers with the most shots and shots on goal, having all four shots be on on goal. Lucia Lopez faced very little pressure, only tallying one save and giving up zero goals.

The Pioneers host the University of Charleston on Wednesday (Oct. 30). First kick is slated for 7 pm at Morris Stadium.
