GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Glenville State Volleyball team completed the Grand Rapids Downtown Classic in Michigan on Saturday (Sept. 14), falling in all four games of the early season tournament. The Pioneers faced Davenport on Thursday, Bemidji State and Northwood on Friday and closed out the weekend with a loss to Tiffin on Saturday.
Game One - GSU 0 | Davenport 3
The Pioneers remained close early in the first set, however a late surge by Davenport allowed them to take the first stanza, 25-18. The Panthers rolled to a second-set victory, 25-13, before being heavily contested by GSU in the final set. Glenville held a 17-16 lead and had it all tied up at 22 but three-straight points by DU pushed the Panthers to a 3-0 win.
Game Two - GSU 0 | Bemidji State 3
A back-and-forth first stanza set the tone for the match as the Pioneers trailed by as much as six points but a strong comeback by the blue and white made it a one-point set at 23-22. BSU closed out the opening set and won the second stanza, 25-11. The third set was much closer, sitting at a 22-22 tie prior to the Beavers taking the final three points of the set to win the match, 3-0.
Game Three - GSU 0 | Northwood 3
The Pioneers struggled to put together much offense against the Timberwolves, having their best set of the match in the first stanza, falling 25-17. A 25-6 second set loss and 25-15 third set loss closed the book against Northwood, 3-0.
Game Four - GSU 1 - Tiffin 3
Tiffin started the match with back-to-back set wins but the Pioneers answered back in the third set with a 25-18 victory. The Dragons were able to bounce back in the fourth and final set of the match, winning 3-1 and ending the weekend for the Pioneers.Â
The Pioneers' Stats For The Weekend
Rita Kelly tallied 37 kills over the four-game span to lead the Pioneers. Freshman Keleigh Chrisman was second on the squad with 23 kills. Sadie Hill accumulated 87 assists, averaging 21.8 assists per game. Defensively, Bryanne Tustin led GSU with 31 digs and both Rita Kelly and Riley Tosseng had eight blocks.
