GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Women's Soccer team went toe-to-toe with one of the MEC's top programs Sunday (Oct. 12) afternoon but fell 3–0 to Fairmont State in a physical, defensive battle at Morris Stadium.
1st Half
The match opened with both teams trading chances but neither finding the back of the net. The Pioneers held their shape well and frustrated the Falcons' attack, limiting clean looks in the final third. Goalkeeper Lucia Lopez and the Glenville defense came up big several times in the first half, turning away 10 Fairmont shots to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.
2nd Half
Fairmont came out firing to start the second half and finally broke through in the 46th minute with a goal from Valentina Gianinetto off a feed from Serenity Thomas. Just four minutes later, Stephanie Pedias doubled the Falcons' lead after a quick counter. Despite the scoreline, the Pioneers created more opportunities as the half went on, pushing forward and outshooting Fairmont in the later stages. The defensive unit continued to make key stops to keep the game within reach, but the Falcons sealed it late when Montserrat Diaz scored in the 90th minute.
