Volleyball Downed in Three Close Sets at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Glenville State volleyball fell in three contested sets to MEC South foe Charleston on Tuesday (Nov. 11) night in the capital city.

In the first set, the Pioneers found themselves playing from behind early, but a four-zero run on Mikayla Curry and Greta Petofi blocks would cut into the UC lead, however the Golden Eagles would close the set with two different five-zero runs themselves to pull away, 25-19. In set two, GSU climbed back into the set late with a kill from Keleigh Chrisman and two aces from Elitsa Peneva to make it a one-point game at 20-19, but UC would again close the set out with a five-zero run, winning the stanza, 25-19. In the final set, Glenville State would hold a slight lead at 14-12 after kills from Kaiya Lian and Rita Kelly, but Charleston retook the lead at 22-16 and did not give it up, winning set three, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.

Patrycja Major had 12 kills and Divine Muo had ten, while Abby Avila had 38 assists. On defense, Kate Strong had six blocks, Sophia Knowles had two blocks and Chloe Fortner had 14 digs.

Glenville State
Kaiya Lian had eight kills to lead the attack, while Keleigh Chrisman had seven and Rita Kelly had six. Elitsa Peneva notched 13 assists in the defeat. Defensively, Mikayla Curry had four blocks and Cali Queen led the team in digs with 13.

Up Next For The Pioneers
Glenville State will return home for Senior Night on Friday (Nov. 14) at 7 p.m. to host Concord.
