GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Nationally ranked Glenville State Wrestling will transition from the open / invite style of wrestling into head-to-head battles starting this week, as the Pioneers will host Georgetown College (Ky.), Davis & Elkins and Bethany tomorrow (Nov. 14) at noon before traveling to Morgantown to take on West Virginia and Appalachian State on Sunday (Nov. 16).
"This is a really busy week for us," said head coach
Dylan Cottrell on the
Pioneer Coaches Show. Cottrell will be sending grapplers up to Findlay on Saturday (Nov. 15) for the Findlay Open as well. "The real stuff's getting ready to begin. The competition really lights up this weekend and gets going."
GSU's home quad on Friday afternoon will feature a pair of brand-new programs in Bethany (D-III) and Georgetown (NAIA) as well as Davis & Elkins, who recently hired a new coach. "I think he's doing the right things with that program to help them get back in the right direction," added Cottrell. The Pioneers are looking to tune up into Sunday's bouts with a pair of Division I opponents in West Virginia and Appalachian State.
West Virginia is currently 20
th in the country at the DI level, featuring seven nationally ranked wrestlers in their starting lineup, including two top six Mountaineers. WVU opened the season with a 32-6 win at American and are under the direction of Tim Flynn, who is in his 7
th season leading the WVU Wrestling program.
Appalachian State enters Sunday (1-1) overall, recently defeating Hofstra, 24-15, after falling to Navy, 27-13, to open the new year. The App State Mountaineers have three nationally ranked wrestlers according to FloWrestling, but no one is ranked inside the top 25. 17
th-year head coach JohnMark Bentley will lead Appalachian State out on Sunday afternoon.
Glenville State's home quad will be streaming live on the Mountain East Conference Digital Network with coverage beginning at noon.
GSU's match against WVU will be on ESPN+, however their bout with Appalachian State will not be televised.
