Hot Shooting Charleston Edges Glenville State in MEC Opener

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Glenville State Men's Basketball team went toe-to-toe with one of the MEC's toughest home teams on Wednesday (Dec. 3) night, but a late Charleston surge and a blistering shooting performance from deep lifted the Golden Eagles past the Pioneers, 94-88, inside H. Bernard Wehrle Arena. Glenville drops to (3-3) overall and (0-1) in MEC play, while Charleston improves to (4-2, 1-0 MEC).

1st Half
Both offenses came out flying. After an early UC burst, the Pioneers settled in behind Jalen Knott, Elijah Redfern, and Prince Mosengo. Knott's first three of the night put GSU on the board, and buckets from Ammar Maxwell and Don Colon-Lewis kept things tight in the opening minutes.

Midway through the half, Glenville found its rhythm from the arc. Knott drilled a transition three to make it 14-11, and Redfern followed with a triple from the wing to push the lead to 17-11. Every time the Pioneers stretched it out, Charleston answered, using its depth and pace to stay within striking distance.

Off the bench, Rye Gadd gave Glenville a huge lift, attacking in transition for an and-one and knocking down multiple threes to keep momentum on the GSU side. His burst helped spark a stretch where the Pioneers repeatedly answered UC's runs and traded the lead in the final minutes of the half.

After a Glenville flurry that included a Knott fastbreak layup, a Redfern transition finish, and a late jumper from Mosengo, the Pioneers headed into the locker room up 48-46. GSU shot 46.2% from the field (18–39) in the opening 20 minutes and knocked down 7-of-19 from three (36.8%).

2nd Half
The second half turned into a heavyweight shootout. Charleston opened with a quick stretch from deep to grab the lead, but the Pioneers answered right back. Knott and Colon-Lewis traded threes with the Golden Eagles early, and a 9-0 Glenville run — highlighted by a Knott triple, a Redfern drive, and a Colon-Lewis finish — swung the momentum and put GSU back in front, 63-59.

From there, the lead changed hands repeatedly. Knott kept attacking, hitting a pull-up jumper and getting to the line, while Maxwell and Mosengo went to work in the paint. A Maxwell layup pushed the edge to 76-74, and moments later a Boulden corner three and another Maxwell bucket gave Glenville its largest cushion of the night at 81-76 with just over six minutes to play.

Charleston, though, had one more run in them. Behind Braden Chapman, Matthew Shelton, and Thomas Hailey, the Golden Eagles chipped away at the stripe and from beyond the arc. Glenville still led 83-78 after a Colon-Lewis layup with 5:20 remaining and 85-83 after two Knott free throws at the 2:13 mark, but UC closed the game on a decisive burst.

Chapman buried a deep three to put Charleston ahead 86-85 with 1:43 left, then added a fastbreak layup on the next trip to make it 88-85. Shelton delivered the dagger with a right-wing triple in the final minute, and UC sealed it at the line to escape with the 94-88 win despite a gritty road effort from the Pioneers.

The Pioneers won points off turnovers 22-20, held a 19-17 advantage in fast-break points, and got 17 bench points, but were ultimately undone by Charleston's efficiency from long range in the closing stretch.
