GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Men's Basketball team picked up its first Mountain East Conference win of the season on Saturday (Dec. 6) afternoon, knocking off West Virginia State 99-92 inside the Waco Center. The Pioneers improve to (4-3) overall and (1-1) in league play while staying undefeated at home
1st Half
Glenville came out on fire. A quick jumper from Jalen Knott and a pair of threes from Don Colon-Lewis and Knott gave the Pioneers an early 8-0 burst. West Virginia State countered behind Ishmael Smith and Norris Bourne, eventually taking a brief 17-12 lead, but Glenville responded immediately.
Maxwell drilled a three to steady the offense, Knott cashed another triple, and Redfern began asserting complete control of the game. His fast break scoring and late-clock shot-making sparked a 15-3 Glenville run that flipped the momentum entirely. Off the bench, Jordan Holmes provided a much-needed spark, knocking down a jumper and bringing instant energy that helped Glenville push the lead back to multiple possessions.
Redfern closed the half with nine points in the final three minutes, including a deep three and a pull-up jumper that sent the Pioneers into halftime up 50-39. Glenville shot 52.9 percent from the field in the opening half, hit seven threes and never trailed again after their late-half surge.
2nd Half
The Pioneers kept rolling as Knott opened the half with another three and back-to-back dunks from Prince Mosengo quickly stretched the lead to 59-47. Minutes later, a Knott fast break layup pushed the margin to 61-47, Glenville's largest lead of the afternoon.
But West Virginia State caught fire from the perimeter. Trey Harris put together one of the best shooting displays in the MEC this season, hitting several deep threes as the Yellow Jackets stormed back. Behind Harris' 33 points, WVSU cut what had been a sixteen-point deficit down to just three at 85-82 with under five minutes to play. Glenville answered like a veteran group.
Colon-Lewis knocked down a jumper, then grabbed an offensive rebound for a tip-in. Moments later, Redfern buried a right-wing three to make it 92-85. Harris hit one more to trim it again, but Maxwell immediately responded with a clutch top-of-the-key three and then scored in transition to extend the lead to 97-90. Knott added a finishing layup in the final minute as Glenville sealed the seven-point victory.
