Pioneers Win Overtime Thriller Versus West Virginia Wesleyan

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Men's Basketball team survived an overtime thriller in a big come from behind victory against West Virginia Wesleyan earlier today, 92-90, to extend their win streak to four. The Pioneers record improves to (14-10, 8-8 MEC).

In the first half, the Pioneers got things started with a layup, courtesy of Prince Mosengo. The Bobcats would answer back with a 5-0 run but the Pioneers tied the game back up with a three. The two teams went back-and-forth until the Bobcats took off on a 21-0 run to give them a 16-point lead. The Bobcats kept their double-digit lead until five minutes left in the half when the Pioneers would get their deficit to under eight points. The Bobcats got hot at the end of the half to go up by 12 at the end of the first half, 51-39.

The Pioneers opend the new stanza with a 16-5 run to gain a one-point advantage. The two squads would trade baskets with neither team able to gain an edge. With six seconds left in the game, freshman Elijah Redfern got sent to the charity strip where he would knock in two free throws to give the Pioneers a two point lead. With time left, the fate of the game was left to the Bobcats to determine. The Bobcats, on a last second shot, sent the game to overtime.

In overtime, the Pioneers were ready to put the Bobcats away as right off rip they would go on a 7-0 run, setting the tone for OT. The Bobcats, however, would scratch and claw their way back, making it a one-point game with the Pioneers barely holding on. A careless turnover from the Bobcats allowed the Pioneers to make it a two-point game. WVWC, however, found themselves again with the chance to determine the fate of the game. The Bobcats with, a one and one chance at the free throw line, missed the first shot allowing the time to run out and giving the Pioneers the win, 92-90.

The Bobcats were led tonight by their star player, Alex Mirhosseini, who had 25 points, seven assists, two blocks and two steals. Off the bench, Curtis Litton contributed for the team by putting up 18 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals. Anthony Crosby had 16 points, four rebounds and two blocks in tonight's loss. Alexander Gray was one point away from a double-double as he had nine points and eleven rebounds.

The Pioneers were led in scoring by freshman Ammar Maxwell and forward Devin Collins, who both had 23 points each. Off the bench, Samier Kinsler gave the Pioneers a boost as he contributed 21 points to tonight's win. Freshman Elijah Redfern was a playmaker as he led the Pioneers in assists with seven. On the boards, the Pioneers were led by Prince Mosengo with nine rebounds and Collins who had eight rebounds. On defense, Collins had the only block of the night for GSU while Maxwell and Redfern both had two steals apiece.

Glenville State travels to nationally ranked West Liberty on Wednesday (Feb. 19) to play in the ASRC. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
