Men's Basketball Caps Off Senior Day wtih 11-Point Win Over Wheeling

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Men's Basketball team picked up a conference win against Wheeling this evening, 80-69, firmly sitting in 6th place in the MEC standings. The Pioneers record now stands at (15-11, 9-9 MEC).

In the first half, the Cardinals started the game on a 15-5 run. The Pioneers would cut the Wheeling lead to four halfway through the first half. WU kept the pressure on the Pioneers and brought their lead back up to nine points but the Pioneers answered back with a 11-2 run to tie the game up with six minutes left to play in the half. The lead switched hands once again with Wheeling take a 38-34 advantage into the locker room.

In the second half, the Cardinals would go on an 8-0 run to get their lead to double digits. The Pioneers used an 11-1 run to tie the game back up and eventually take their first lead of the second half. Glenville State would take this lead and run as it the advantage hit double digits on a Devin Collins three, propelling the Pioneers to the 80-69 conference victory.

The Cardinals were led by S.J. Hutchinson, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds, giving him a double double on the night. Sean Ealy was right behind him in scoring with 16 points. Jerry Saunders Jr. contributed on both sides of the ball with 14 points and two steals. Alex Smith was close to getting a double-double as he grabbed eight rebounds and scored six points.

The Pioneers had four players score in double digits tonight with freshman Ammar Maxwell leading the way with 19 points. GSU was led on the boards by guard Samier Kinsler, who grabbed seven rebounds. Dominiq Penn led the Pioneers in both steals and assists tonight with three steals and three assists. Both Don Colon-Lewis and Paul Gakmar had two blocks apiece in the win.

Glenville State travels to the University of Charleston on Wednesday (Feb. 26). Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
