Preview: Softball Starts MEC Play with Charleston & West Virginia State on the Road

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – Glenville State Softball is back in action for another busy weekend on the road to begin Mountain East Conference play. The Lady Pioneers will travel to Kanawha County today (Mar. 14) and tomorrow (Mar. 15) for doubleheaders against the University of Charleston and West Virginia State, respectively. They will look to continue a string of successful outings following their performance at THE Spring Games last weekend.

THE OPPONENTS
CHARLESTON
2025 Season
The Golden Eagles are off to another hot start this year, sitting at (7-3) through their early season schedule after capturing back-to-back MEC titles. This is the first season for new head coach Taylor Welch, who is in her first career head coaching opportunity and will look to continue the successful run the Golden Eagles have enjoyed over the last two seasons.

Senior Kayla Moran has set the pace offensively, batting a team-leading .448 in the box with 2 long balls and 11 RBIs. Fellow senior Lindsey Phares is also having a quality year with an average of .444 with one home run and nine RBIs. Junior Kaleigh Serra has also supported the offensive effort with one home run and 8 RBIs. Junior Addison Mass has been strong on the mound in 2025, holding a 5-0 W-L record to go along with a 2.01 ERA and .86 WHIP.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE
2025 Season
The Yellow Jackets begin MEC play with an (8-6) record through their out of conference schedule. They have had several quality wins on the year, including one over reigning CIAA champion Bowie State. Head coach Mattie Best will seek to steer her program back into prominence in her 6th season at the helm, with three-straight seasons under .500 after making the NCAA tournament in her first two.

Redshirt Freshman Kylie Price leads the way on offense, averaging .457 with one home run and six RBIs on the year. Sophomore Sydney Shamblin has also had a large impact with a .429 average and 12 RBIs to lead the team. Junior Emma Pauley will also look to continue her offensive success, with one home run and 12 RBIs herself. Junior Kaleigh Murphy has been the most efficient Yellow Jacket on the mound so far this year, with a 4-2 W-L record and a team-leading 3.89 ERA and 1.64 WHIP.

THE PIONEERS
GLENVILLE STATE
2025 Season
The Lady Pioneers begin the weekend slate with a (10-7) record after winning 5 of 8 in Florida over the weekend, including a 10-1 route of 17th ranked University of Indianapolis. This weekend marks the start of a long string of away games with four total road trips before returning home on March 26.

Quick Look at The Pioneers
Senior Makenna Negley and sophomore Zailees Seda both sit above .400 on the 2025 season and have combined for 30 RBIs. Sophomore Delaney Warnick has been a flamethrower in the box with five home runs and impressive 22 RBIs so far in the 2025 campaign, both leading the squad. Addison Aguiniga, Kylee Goodman, and Shelby McDaniels have also contributed greatly to the Lady Pioneers offensive effort with all three recording double digit RBIs. Sophomore Meghan Stump has been a brick wall on the mound in 2025, with a 4-0 W-L record and MEC-leading 0.68 ERA. AndiJo Howard has also been rock steady for the Lady Pioneers, ranking second in the MEC with a 1.66 ERA to go along with a 1.03 WHIP and 2-1 W-L. Junior Kylie Burdick rounds out a strong rotation and currently sits at second in the MEC with 36 strikeouts.
