Preview: Men’s Basketball Matched Up with #3 Seed Charleston to Begin MEC Tournament

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Men's Basketball turns their attention to tournament play as they travel to Wheeling, W.Va. to face the University of Charleston in the Quarterfinals of the Mountain East Conference Tournament tomorrow (Mar. 7).

THE OPPONENT
CHARLESTON
2024-25 Season
The Golden Eagles finished the regular season with a record of (18-9, 14-6 MEC), earning them the third seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. In the regular seaso,n the Golden Eagle completed the series sweep against the Pioneers.

Head Coach
James Long is in his first season as Head Coach for the University of Charleston's Men's Basketball team. Last season, Long was the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Davidson Day School, where he went 24-7 and won the State Championship in NCISAA 2A Division. Before coaching Davidsons Day School, Long spent three years at WVU Tech as the Head Men's Basketball Coach, where he went (62-21) with a 75%-win percentage.

Quick Look at The Golden Eagles
This season, the Golden Eagles are led by Ja'Corey Lipkins, who is averaging 14 points and three rebounds and was named the MEC Freshman of the Year. CJ Meradith is right behind him, averaging 13 points and four rebounds. Dwaine Jones has been the playmaker for the Golden Eagles, averaging seven assists a game. On the boards, Obinna Ugwuakazi leads the team with six rebounds while Zach Loveday is averaging five rebounds.

THE PIONEERS

2024-25 Season
The Pioneers finished the regular season with a record of (16-12, 10-10 MEC), earning them the sixth seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. The Pioneers finished the season winning seven out of their last 10 games.

Quick Look at The Pioneers
The Pioneers are led by Devin Collins, who earned All-MEC First Team by averaging 15 points and five rebounds per game. Freshman Ammar Maxwell has had a tremendous start to his career, averaging 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a steal to make the All-MEC Second Team. Samier Kinsler and Don Colon-Lewis round out Pioneers who are averaging double digits with 10 points per game each. Prince Mosengo leads the team on the boards with eight rebounds per game.
