Softball Splits First Day in Florida at THE Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Glenville State Softball team split their first two games of THE Spring Games in Florida earlier today, beating Findlay, 2-0, but falling to a now (14-2) Winona State squad in eight innings, 3-2.

Game One - GSU 2 | Findlay 0
The Pioneers opened up their Florida trip with an hour and 10-minute contest with the Oilers. The offensive standstill continued for the first three innings until Delaney Warnick mashed a home run to left field to give the Pioneers the two-run lead. Findlay threatened with a runner in scoring position in the 6th but would not be able to muster any offense against Meghan Stump as the Pioneers secured the 2-0 victory.

Final Stats
Findlay
Aurora Lescody had the lone hit for the Oilers as Annika Bredel stole two bags in the loss. Emma Jones pitched six innings, garnering the defeat after surrendering two runs (both earned) on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Glenville State
Four different Pioneers produced the four GSU hits, headlined by Delaney Warnick's two-run bomb that proved to be the difference. Meghan Stump threw a gem, pitching a complete game with just one hit and two walks, as well as two strikeouts to earn the win.

Game Two - GSU 2 | Winona State 3 (8 Inn.)
The Warriors threatened early but Kylie Burdick was able to minimize the damage, surrendering just one run in the opening inning with consecutive strikeouts to close the stanza. It wasn't until the fifth inning when pinch hitter AndiJo Howard struck a single to right field to knot things up at one. Both squads had opportunities to take the advantage in the closing innings but an 8th inning would be needed to crown the winner.

The Pioneers nearly found trouble in the top of the 8th but Makenna Negley drove a single to right field to plate Emily Nolan, giving GSU the one-run lead. Winona State tied it up in the bottom half with a sac fly and a laser beam over the left fielder's head walked it off for WSU, 3-2.

Final Stats
Winona State
Logan Anderson led the charge for the Warriors, going 2-3 with an RBI. Braelee Jodarski and Indigo Fish both had a hit and an RBI in the victory. After Izzy Howe allowed one run (earned) over 4.1 innings, Jayda Berg came in relief and picked up the win with 3.2 innings pitched, one run allowed (earned) and four hits.

Glenville State
Makenna Negley had herself a game, going 3-3 with an RBI and a walk. AndiJo Howard and Emily Nolan also had a hit while Howard added an RBI. Kylie Burdick fanned eight batters in 7.2 innings of work as the junior gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks.

Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers will continue their Florida trip tomorrow (Mar. 8) with games against Bemidji State and Slippery Rock. First pitch is slated for 11:15 a.m.
