CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Glenville State Volleyball team went (2-2) this weekend at the UC/WVSU Crossover, splitting both days. The Pioneers fell to East Stroudsburg, 3-0, but bounced back with a 3-2 win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday (Sept. 12). GSU then won another 3-2 match against Roberts Wesleyan to start out Saturday (Sept. 13) and lost to Shepherd, 3-0, to close out the crossover in Charleston.
DAY ONE
Game One - GSU 0 | East Stroudsburg 3
In the first set, the Warriors jumped out to an early 13-3 lead, however
Rita Kelly had four kills to bring the Pioneers closer but could not overcome the large deficit, losing set one, 25-10. Set two was much tighter at GSU held leads throughout the set, controlling the early portions by going up 3-0, and 8-3 but ESU had answers as ESU would climb back into the set, winning 26-24. In set three, East Stroudsburg controlled the tempo early, however five straight points from the Pioneers had cut the lead to one, but the Warriors would tally the final points, winning 25-20 in set three, and the match, 3-0.

Romina Martinez led the team in kills with 10 while Anna Coulter had nine and Allison Birtcil and Kelly Crites both chipped in six. Kata Kovacs paced the Warriors with 19 assists and Kyra Bishop had seven. Defensively, Coulter had four blocks and Marta Leeland had 12 digs to lead the way.
Glenville State
Rita Kelly and
Kaiya Lian paced the Pioneer offense with 11 kills each while
Keleigh Chrisman,
Cali Queen and
Greta Petofi all had three.
Sadie Hill led the team in assists with 16 and
Irmak Bezek chipped in 10. Petofi and
Ava O'Hare led the defense as Pefofi had two blocks and O'Hare had 12 digs.
Game Two - GSU 3 | Kentucky Wesleyan 2
In a matchup against Kentucky Wesleyan, the first set of the match was back-and-forth the entire way until a run by the GSU offense scored five straight points, closing out the set, 25-23. Set two would be similar as neither team could build a lead, and a kill from
Greta Petofi gave the Pioneers a one-point lead late, but KWC scored the next three points, winning 27-25. Set three was a set of runs as GSU saw themselves falling behind but a six-point run had them trailing by only two points in the late stages of set three. However, Kentucky Wesleyan would hang on and take a 2-1 lead in the match with a set three win, 25-21.
In a must-win set four, GSU controlled the set from the get-go, racing out to a 4-0 lead and finding themselves up 19-15 late. The Pioneers were able to hang on and force a set five, taking the fourth set, 25-20. In the fifth and final set five, the Pioneers once again controlled the pace, holding a lead at 8-4 at the halfway point and GSU would hold their lead the rest of the way, completing the comeback, winning set five, 15-12.

Kentucky Wesleyan
Hadley Wolfe led the team offensively with 22 kills and Emmy Goering chipped in with 11 while Juliana Greaney had 34 assists. Defensively, Wolfe had six blocks and Gracie Newton had four with Maddie Hanshew notching 22 digs and Greaney finishing with 15.
Glenville State
Kaiya Lian led the offense with 18 kills while
Keleigh Chrisman and
Mikayla Curry both had nine.
Deniz Selen Yazar chipped in seven kills and
Irmak Bezek led the team in assists with 30 and
Sadie Hill had 23. Defensively, Curry had three blocks and Lian had two while
Cali Queen had 29 digs and
Morgan Stephenson had 13.
DAY TWO
Game One - GSU 3 | Roberts Wesleyan 2
The Pioneers took set one 25-19 after a six-to-zero run created separation and gave them the early one-nothing lead in the match. In set two, GSU found themselves in an early hole, however a four-to-zero run got them close late, however GSU fell in set two, 25-17. In set three, Glenville State had two different four-to-zero runs to propel them to another set win, 25-22, and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
In set four, the blue and white raced out to an early lead at 9-4, however they squandered the lead late, falling 25-23 in set four as Roberts Wesleyan forced a decisive set five. The Pioneers showed resilience in set five, overcoming a 8-5 deficit midway through, scoring 10 straight points to secure the victory 15-8, and the match, 3-2.

Camryn Karelus led the team with 13 kills and Morgan Burnett recorded 10 while Sierra George had 22 assists and Ryan Hull had 19. Defensively, Morgan Verbridge had six blocks and Burnett led the team in digs with 12.
Glenville State
Keleigh Chrisman had 16 kills to lead the team and
Deniz Selen Yazar added in 10 with
Irmak Bezek finishing with 29 assists to pace the offense. Defensively,
Mikayla Curry had four blocks and
Mylani Jackson had two while
Ava O'Hare had 15 digs and
Cali Queen had 12.
Game Two - GSU 0 | Shepherd 3
In the last match of the weekend for the blue and white, they found themselves trailing early, however they climbed back into the match at 23-18 but could not complete the comeback, falling in set one, 25-18. In set two, both teams would trade points back and forth as the set was tied at 20-all, however the Rams pulled away 25-22. In set three, the Pioneers found themselves trailing throughout and could not gain traction to get back into the set, losing the third and final set, 25-17.

Sophia Ryan led the Rams with 12 kills as Ada McCoy had 11 and Amya David had nine while Macy Buso had 42 assists to lead the team. On defense, Rylee Lenz had two blocks and Madigan Faircloth had 13 digs.
Glenville State
Cali Queen led the team with eight kills while
Mikayla Curry and
Kaiya Lian both had five.
Irmak Bezek had 14 assists and
Sadie Hill chipped in with 10. Defensively,
Elitsa Peneva and Queen led the team with five digs as Bezek,
Ava O'Hare and
Morgan Stephenson all had four.
