INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Women's Soccer team battled the defending MEC champions on Sunday (Sept. 14) but fell 3-1 on the road at West Virginia State. The Pioneers pulled even late in the first half before WVSU found goals after the break.
1st Half
West Virginia State opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Leila Karam, but the Pioneers answered back shortly after. Just over ten minutes later, Maddalena Gallon buried a penalty kick in the 40th minute, her first goal in a Pioneer uniform, to bring GSU level heading into halftime.
2nd Half
The Pioneers kept battling but the Yellow Jackets regained the lead in the 50th minute when Itzel Nunez scored off a pair of quick passes. Despite strong defending and timely saves, WVSU extended its advantage in the 77th minute as Karam netted her second of the day. Glenville State pushed forward late, creating chances on frame, but couldn't close the gap.
