GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer Basketball team saw their second half comeback attempt fall just short as they dropped their first home game of the year and had their nine-game winning streak snapped by Wheeling earlier today (Jan. 17), 69-66. GSU is now (13-3, 7-2 MEC).
1st Half
The Cardinals started off the scoring with a good jumpshot but Khalia Bryant tied the game at two with a layup as the first quarter became a back-and-forth battle with free throws from Carine Pinkney cutting the WU lead to just one at the end of the first stanza. In the second, Nwando Okigbo would connect on a putback after an offensive rebound to give the blue and white a one-point lead, while Ashlyn Riley and Jayda Allie also had scores, but Wheeling extended their lead to five going into the break after sinking a three pointer with under a minute left.
2nd Half
In the third, the Cardinals pushed their advantage to 11 with an early flurry of points, but five straight points for Riley helped the GSU cause. However, the Lady Pioneers couldn't gain much traction and would find themselves down five again heading to the final quarter. In the fourth, Bryant splashed a three to cut the lead to just three with four minutes remaining, and Allie hit a three from the wing to tie the game at 60 all. Wheeling would answer, retaking the lead, but a layup from Okigbo with 1:14 to play gave Glenville State a one-point lead. From there, the Cardinals again answered with a counterpunch to retake the lead. The Lady Pioneers missed the game-tying three with the clock running out as they fell, 69-66, inside the Waco Center.
