Hot Start, Heavy Finish: Falcons Catch Fire Late to Clip Pioneers, 101–86

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - For 20 minutes, the Glenville State Men's Basketball team looked poised to steal a statement win on the road in Fairmont, however, Fairmont State flipped the script after the break, erupting for 67 second-half points to pull away and hand the Pioneers a 101–86 setback Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon inside Joe Retton Arena. With the defeat, GSU fell to (12-8) overall and (7-6) in league play.

1st Half
Glenville came out swinging from the opening tip, with Jalen Knott setting the tone immediately. The senior guard buried two early threes to put the Pioneers in front and keep Fairmont on its heels. Elijah Redfern followed with a triple of his own and an aggressive finish at the rim as Glenville jumped out to an early advantage.

The middle stretch of the half was defined by pace and pressure. Glenville turned defense into offense with steals and fast-break opportunities, capitalizing with transition buckets and confident perimeter shooting. Knott stayed hot—knocking down another three and attacking the paint—while Prince Mosengo battled inside to generate second-chance points and earn trips to the free-throw line. Even when Fairmont responded with timely makes, Glenville consistently answered. Corey Boulden knocked down back-to-back threes to push the lead into double digits, and the Pioneers carried their rhythm into the locker room, taking a 45–34 lead into halftime after a sharp and assertive opening 20 minutes.

2nd Half
Fairmont wasted no time changing the tempo—and the tone. The Falcons came out firing, stacking threes early and chipping away at the deficit possession by possession. As the shots continued to fall, the momentum shifted decisively. The Pioneers fought to keep control as Redfern opened the half with a three, and Knott answered again in transition before drilling another deep ball to maintain the lead. When Boulden buried multiple second-half threes, the Pioneers briefly regained breathing room, pushing the advantage to 72–61 with just over 11 minutes remaining.

But Fairmont's offense hit another gear. The Falcons combined perimeter shooting with aggressive drives and timely free throws, launching a decisive run that swung the game for good. A brief tie at 75–75 was quickly erased by back-to-back Fairmont makes, and the margin ballooned into double digits down the stretch. Despite Glenville's resilience and a monster scoring night from Knott, Fairmont's blistering second-half efficiency—and a barrage of clutch threes—proved too much to overcome as the Pioneers fell, 101-86.
