Preview: Softball Welcomes WVSU & UC to Open MEC Play

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Softball will welcome West Virginia State and Charleston this weekend to open Mountain East Conference play at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. The Pioneers will square off with the Yellow Jackets on Saturday (Mar. 21) and the Golden Eagles on Sunday (Mar. 22) in doubleheaders.

THE OPPONENTS
WEST VIRGINIA STATE
2026 Season
The Yellow Jackets enter conference play (7-8) overall, with key wins over California (Pa.), Seton Hill, Bowie State and Tusculum. WVSU played in the SMSC Classic in February, winning three of their four games.
 
Quick Look at The Yellow Jackets
West Virginia State is led offensively by the stick of Kylie Price, who is hitting .415 with three home runs, 10 RBIs, four doubles 17 hits and 11 walks. Olivia Bell also has three home runs and 10 RBIs on the year, adding a .325 AVG and three doubles to her totals. Sydney Shamblin has been another impressive and powerful bat for WVSU, hitting .343 with two homers and 10 runs batted in.
 
In the circle, two Yellow Jackets have below a 2.50 ERA with qualified innings. Hope Sizemore has started three games and posted a team-best 2.33 ERA with a (2-1) record and 11 strikeouts in 18.0 IP. Kaleigh Murphy is (1-1) in five appearances (two starts) with a 2.42 ERA in 17.1 IP while Adrianna Green has struck out 24 batters in 24.1 IP.
 
CHARLESTON
2026 Season
The Golden Eagles have constructed a busy non-conference slate, playing 24 games with a (16-8) overall record. Thus far, UC has picked up key wins over Edinboro, Shepherd, Ashland, Winona State, St. Cloud State and Seton Hill.
 
Quick Look at The Golden Eagles
Kayla Moran (.361 AVG, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 3 2B, 1 3B) and Taylor Hodson (.342 AVG, 3 HR, 20 RBI, 4 2B) have been the most dangers hitters in the Gold Eagle lineup for second-year head coach Taylor Welch. Ella Zucchero has been a valuable piece as well, utilizing hits (24) and walks (10) to notch her 15 RBIs and .312 average.
 
Addison Mass, who was a force for the Golden Eagles in their eventual quest of the 2025 MEC Tournament Championship, has yet again been dominant. Mass is (9-2) in 12 starts with a 1.78 ERA, 96 strikeouts and 11 complete games through 78.2 IP. Cali Masters has logged over 50 innings in 2026, and has been a great second arm for UC. She's (6-3) in 10 appearances (eight starts) with a 2.26 ERA, 72 strikeouts, two shutouts and three complete games in 52.2 IP.
 
THE PIONEERS
GLENVILLE STATE
2026 Season
After a hot start, the Pioneers sit at (13-7) overall and have lost four out of their last five. Glenville State is looking to turn the tide with the start of conference play, already picking up impressive wins over Emory & Henry, Lincoln Memorial, Tusculum, Bowie State, Seton Hill, Gannon, Grand Valley State and California (Pa.).
 
Quick Look at The Pioneers
Glenville State has only hit four home runs as a team, but sixth-year head coach Sara Scoone's Pioneers have found ways to net runs. Zailees Seda is hitting a whopping .460 with a 1.056 OPS, 10 RBIs, four doubles, three triples and an impressive 29 hits. Delaney Warnick has shown spurts of power, notching a home run, team-high 17 RBIs, three doubles and a .377 AVG. Shelby McDaniels and Emily Nolan have both noched 12 RBIs while McDaniels has hit a team-best eight doubles in 2026.
 
The pitching staff is led by senior Kylie Burdick, who comes into league play with a 2.43 ERA, (6-2) record, five complete games, four shutouts and 43 strikeouts in 54.2 IP. Youngstown State transfer Maci Boggess is off to a hot start in a Pioneer uniform, logging 44.1 IP and a (4-3) record with five complete games. Meghan Stump (2.53 ERA, 19.1 IP) and AndiJo Howard (5.25 ERA, 9.1 ERA) have provided support in the circle.
