GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Baseball team split a doubleheader with Point Park on Saturday (Mar. 21) before falling in both games against Salem on Sunday (Mar. 22) at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. The Pioneers are now (13-11) overall and (2-4) in Mountain East Conference play.
Saturday (Mar. 21)
Game One – GSU 3 | Point Park 6
After a scoreless opening inning, Point Park struck first in the top of the second, using a two-RBI single to take an early 2-0 lead. The visitors added to that advantage in the third inning when Blake Ewing connected on a solo home run down the left field line to make it 3-0. Glenville State answered in the bottom of the third, cutting into the deficit with a pair of runs. Jetsel Cajigas-Martinez delivered an RBI double down the right field line before Zach Dellerman followed with an RBI groundout to trim the lead to 3-2. The Pioneers then evened the game in the fourth, as Adam Bright singled to left field to plate a run and make it 3-3.
Both pitching staffs settled in from there, keeping the game tied through the fifth and sixth innings. Point Park, however, delivered the decisive blow in the seventh, as Olindo Pezzone launched a three-run home run to left field to put the visitors back in front, 6-3. Glenville State threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Gavin Blair came through with a pinch-hit double, but the Pioneers could not bring a run across as Point Park claimed game one. At the plate, David Arroyo and Jacob Meadows each had two hits for Glenville State, while Cajigas-Martinez and Bright each drove in a run. On the mound, Grant Landis tossed 5.1 innings, allowing three runs while striking out six.
Game Two – GSU 6 | Point Park 4
Point Park grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of an error and an RBI single. Glenville State answered immediately in the bottom half, as Zach Laurie singled to center field to drive in a run and tie the game at 1-1. The Pioneers took control in the second inning, scoring three runs to build a 4-1 lead. Colby Guy started the rally with a double before David Arroyo followed with an RBI double. Glenville State added two more runs in the inning on a failed pickoff attempt and a Point Park error. GSU extended the lead in the third when Guy blasted a two-run home run to right center, pushing the advantage to 6-1.
Point Park made things interesting late, cutting into the deficit with a two-run home run in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth to pull within 6-4. But the Pioneer bullpen held on, and Ashton Crace closed things out in the seventh, inducing a double play before recording the final out to secure the save. Guy led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Arroyo added a double and an RBI, while Laurie also drove in a run. Zach Dellerman earned the win after allowing just one unearned run across four innings.
Sunday (Mar. 22)
Game One – GSU 8 | Salem 14
Salem opened the scoring in the second inning with a grand slam to jump in front 4-0, but Glenville State answered immediately with a four-run inning of its own. Colby Guy ignited the comeback with a two-run home run before the Pioneers added two more runs on a walk and a hit-by-pitch to knot the score at 4-4. The Tigers responded in the third with three runs on a double, sacrifice fly and an error to retake the lead at 7-4. Glenville State chipped away in the bottom half, as Jetsel Cajigas-Martinez lifted a sacrifice fly and Jacob Meadows drove in a run on an error to cut the deficit to 7-6. Salem created more separation in the fourth with a three-run home run, stretching the lead to 10-6. Once again, the Pioneers fought back, as Guy connected on his second two-run homer of the day to bring GSU within 10-8.
That was as close as Glenville State would get. Salem added a run in the sixth before scoring three more in the seventh to pull away for the 14-8 victory. Guy had a big day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Meadows drove in two runs, while Cajigas-Martinez also added an RBI. Glenville State totaled eight hits but was hurt by five defensive errors.
Game Two – GSU 2 | Salem 7 (8 Inn.)
Glenville State took the lead in the first inning when Jetsel Cajigas-Martinez came around to score on a balk, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. The Pioneers added another run in the fourth as Zach Laurie launched a solo home run to right center, making it 2-0. GSU pitching kept Salem off the board through the first six innings, limiting the Tigers to just two hits and stranding multiple runners. Salem finally broke through in the seventh, using a two-out rally to score twice and even the game at 2-2.
The Tigers then took control in the eighth, capitalizing on walks, a hit-by-pitch and a Glenville State error to score five runs and turn a tie game into a 7-2 lead. Laurie accounted for the lone RBI with his home run, while Jacob Meadows, Colby Guy, and Greyson McNeill each had a hit in the loss. The Pioneer staff was strong early, but Salem's five-run eighth inning proved to be the difference.
