GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Baseball team split both days of their four-game series with MEC South Division leading Charleston on Friday (Apr. 3) and Saturday (Apr. 4). The Pioneers now sit (16-16) overall and (5-9) in the MEC.
Friday (Apr. 3)
Game One – GSU 1 | Charleston 0
Zach Dellerman pitched an absolute gem for the Pioneers, hurling a complete game shutout with just three hits allowed, no walks and seven strikeouts. The Wheeling transfer got offensive help in the sixth inning when
Carlos De Jesus scored
Ashton Crace on a sacrifice fly, and that's all GSU would need to take game of the four-game set, 1-0.
Game Two – GSU 4 | Charleston 7
UC jumped on the Pioneers early with two runs in the top of the first, but an error by the Golden Eagles pitcher split the Charleston lead in half. A homer by the maroon and gold put the advantage back to two, however,
Zach Dellerman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3-2 before
Cody Rinehart tied it at three-all with a sac fly.
Jacob Meadows gave GSU their first lead of the game with an RBI double, but Charleston plated one run in the 6
th and three in the 7
th to split day one, 7-4.
Saturday (Apr. 4)
Game Three – GSU 4 | Charleston 7
Colby Guy put the Pioneers on the board in the bottom of the first with a sac fly, however, both offenses went quiet until the 4
th inning when
Carlos De Jesus blasted a two-run shot to put GSU up 3-0.
Ashton Crace added onto the lead with an RBI double in the 5
th, but Charleston split the deficit in half in the following inning with a two-RBI single. A pair of sac fly's tied it up in the top of the 7
th and the Pioneers put the winning run at third with two outs but a deep drive to centerfield by
Jetsel Cajigas-Martinez died at the warning track, forcing extra innings.
Neither team plated runs in the 8
th, but Charleston broke it wide open in the top of the 9
th on a sac fly, RBI single and RBI double to boost to a 7-4 advantage. Glenville State would be sat down in order in the bottom half of the inning as Charleston completed the comeback victory.
Game Four – GSU 3 | Charleston 1
It was a
Trent Taylor masterclass in the final game of the series, as the sophomore went 6.1 innings and allowed just six hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. Taylor got his run support early, with
Carlos De Jesus and
Luke Sweigart both producing RBI singles in the 1
st inning and
Austin Carter crossing home plate on an error by the first baseman in the second. The Golden Eagles didn't muster much offense until the 7
th inning when a sac fly erased the goose egg on the board.
Zach Dellerman came in and shut the door on UC, with GSU notching the series split in game four, 3-1.

The Pioneers head to Institute next Saturday (Apr. 11) and Sunday (Apr. 12) for a four-game set with West Virginia State.
