ATHENS, W.Va. – The Glenville State Women's Soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Concord to log the program's first-ever win against the Mountain Lions on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 20) at Callaghan Stadium. After a scoreless first 80 minutes, Aitana Viejo found the back of the net late in regulation to give the Pioneers their fourth win of the season and improve to a (4-3) overall and an impressive (4-1) in the MEC.
1st Half
Both teams battled through a defensive opening half, with Concord holding a slight 6-4 advantage in shots. The Mountain Lions created several early opportunities, but Glenville State goalkeeper Lucia Lopez was there, recording three saves to keep the match scoreless. The Pioneers generated chances of their own and earned two corner kicks during the half, but neither side could break through as the teams entered halftime tied at 0-0.
2nd Half
The second half remained tightly contested as both teams searched for the opening goal. Concord recorded three shots after the break, but the Pioneer defense continued to hold strong. Glenville State began creating more opportunities midway through the half, earning multiple corner kicks and forcing Concord goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough into action. Martina Roig nearly put the Pioneers ahead in the 60th minute, but her shot was saved. Valentina Quiroz followed with another scoring chance shortly after as Glenville State continued to apply pressure.
The breakthrough finally came in the 82nd minute. Just moments after re-entering the match, Aitana Viejo found the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. Glenville State defended the lead over the final minutes of regulation, allowing only one more Concord shot as they secured the shutout victory.

The Mountain Lions finished with a narrow 9-8 advantage in total shots and placed four attempts on goal. Molly Watters, Ella Rowell and Ailsa Swinburne each generated chances offensively, while goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough recorded two saves in the match.
Glenville State
The Pioneers converted one of their three shots on target, with Aitana Viejo providing the match-winning goal. Lucia Lopez recorded four saves to earn the shutout, while Glenville State held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. The victory marked the Pioneers' fourth win of the season, and a (4-1) start in MEC play.
