Glenville State Volleyball Gears up for Crucial Last Week of Regular Season

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Women's Volleyball team enters the final week of the regular season with two crucial matches. The Lady Pioneers can finish at the .500 mark for the first time since the 2000 season, and make the Mountain East Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. Glenville closes out the 2022 season against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan and Concord University.

A Look at WVWC

Currently, West Virginia Wesleyan is tied for fourth in the MEC South Division with the Pioneers. Tuesday's match has serious post-season implications for both squads making it a must-win. This is will be the third meeting between these teams and the second in the conference. In the previous matchup back in September, the match went to five sets with Glenville coming out on top.

Junior Hope Arce-Reed led the Bobcats and match in kills with 15. So far this season Arce-Reed has produced 286 kills which is seventh in the MEC. Mya Bajramovic is second in kills for West Virginia Wesleyan with 239. Senior setter Payton Hefner has accounted for 504 assists and has been the main setter for Wesleyan during the 2022 campaign. 

Defensively Autumn Molenhouse, Joelle Lalla, and Najila Bray have been contributors. In the last match against the Pioneers Bray and Lalla produced three blocks. Lalla leads the Bobcats this season with 74 blocks followed closely by Bray with 69. Autumn Molenhouse with her 12 digs in the last meeting between these two teams tied for a match-high. So far this 2022 season Molenhouse has 295 digs which leads the team.

A Look at Concord

Concord enters Friday's match with a (7-23) overall record and (1-13) in the conference. In the previous matchup between these two squads, the Mountain Lions lost to Glenville 3-0. Currently, CU sits 2 games behind the Pioneers and Bobcats. 

In the last meeting between these two teams errors would be the deciding factor. The Mountain Lions committed 21 threw three sets while Glenville committed seven. Sophomore Hannah Steele finished the match with 10 kills followed by Gracie Brackney with eight. Setter Kenzee Chaffin accounted for 26 assists. Defensively, Kyndra Pilant led the contest and Concord with nine digs.

So far this 2022 season Steele leads the Mountain Lions in kills with 311 which is seventh in the MEC. Freshman Kenzee Chaffin's 754 assists ranks her fifth in the conference. Kyndra Pilant has proven to be an overall threat for Concord producing 228 kills and 60 blocks. Throughout the 2022 season, Kaylee Spees has been solid defensively accounting for 241.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville enters the week with a (14-16) overall record and (3-11) in the MEC. The Lady Pioneers open Tuesday's match with a six-game losing streak. As the regular season enters it's final week GSU is still one of the best serving teams in the country and the conference. The Lady Pioneers are first in the conference for aces per set and third in the nation for total service aces. Katarzyna Niderla and Helín Halden lead the charge for Glenville and both are ranked inside the top 10 in the conference. 

Katarzyna Niderla has proven to be an overall offensive threat for Lady Pioneers. During the 2022 campaign, Niderla has produced 370 kills and 59 service aces. On the defensive side, Niderla leads the team in blocks with 85. Glenville's Freshman has been productive as well for Coach Kevin John's squad. Rita Kelly is second in kills for the Pioneers with 215 followed by Nalaina Funk with 153. Funk like Niderla has shined on the other side of the ball with 79 blocks this season.

Senior defensive specialist Lindsay Winkler leads the Lady Pioneers in digs with 423 which is sixth in the conference. Transfer Zoe Schmidt has been on a hot streak here in the closing month of the season. In the last four matches, Schmidt has accounted for 57 digs. Schmidt also has paired her 57 digs with 45 kills as well.
