Lady Pioneers Hold on to Defeat West Virginia Wesleyan 61-55

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team was tested inside the Waco Center by the West Virginia Wesleyan. The Lady Pioneers entered the fourth quarter with a seven-point advantage and came out on top 61-55. Glenville State would be held to its lowest point total of the season but had their fewest amount of turnovers this season with six.

In the opening minutes of tonight's contest, Mo Pruitt got the Lady Pioneers. However, West Virginia Wesleyan answered every shot made by GSU. Twice in the first five minutes, the Bobcats had a one-possession lead over Glenville State. Before the under-five media timeout, Hya Haywood hit a three to give Coach Stephens's squad a one-point lead.

Coming out of the stoppage of play the Lady Pioneers hit a cold snap offensively but ended the quarter with some momentum. Glenville State would hit two more threes before the end of the first quarter. Both Cabria Lewis and Mickayla Perdue connected from beyond the arc. Cabria's three-pointer with exactly one minute left put the Lady Pioneers up four.

In the second quarter, both squads continued to battle for the advantage with neither taking control. The Lady Pioneers in the last five minutes started to swing the momentum in their favor. At the 2:08 mark, GSU took their largest lead of the first half. West Virginia Wesleyan once more fought to make it a one-possession game. Before entering halftime WVWC produced a 7-0 run making it 31-28.

Coming out of the half Glenville State answered West Virginia Wesleyan's late run with an 8-0 to start the third quarter. During the run, Hya Haywood produced four out of the eight points. The Lady Pioneers' hot streak gave GSU their largest advantage of the contest 39-28. But the Bobcats would cut Glenville's lead down to two at the 2:29 mark. With a layup by Haywood and another three-pointer by Lewis Cabria put Glenville State up 48-41 before the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter West Virginia Wesleyan once more cut GSU's advantage down to one possession. During the next four minutes, both defenses held each other in check not allowing a single point to be scored. A late three-pointer by Mickayla Perdue broke the scoring drought and gave Glenville an eight-point lead. With a minute left, the deficit became too much for WVWC to handle. Before the final horn the Bobcat's Daveona Hatchell made a layup making it 61-55.

Mickayla Perdue finished with a game-high 15 points and accounted for two assists. Junior guard Breanna Campbell had a team-high nine rebounds. Hya Haywood would be the second Lady Pioneer to finish in double figures producing 12 points.
