Lady Pioneers 12 Game Winning Streak Comes to an End

Institute, W.Va. - Glenville State women's basketball team fell on the road to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State 75-74. While the Lady Pioneers won the turnover battle GSU would be out-rebounded 57-31. Glenville was held to seven offensive rebounds their lowest of the season.

In the opening minute, the Yellow Jackets struck first with a three by Caroline Scott. While Glenville state won the tip they could not convert on their first two chances. The Lady Pioneers were able to break the press early getting high-quality looks inside the paint. Neither team could create separation throughout the first five minutes of the first quarter. A layup by Deja Atkinson cut the Yellow Jackets' lead down to one possession before the first media timeout of the contest. 

During the last five minutes of the opening quarter West Virginia State jumped out to a seven-point lead. After Zakorah Russell hit both of her free throws the Yellow Jackets forced a turnover. Russell would find Shelby Harmer for the three to gain the advantage of 20-13. The Lady Pioneers continued to battle but WVSU's press continued to disrupt Glenville State. Heading into the second quarter GSU trailed 24-15

GSU started off the second quarter on a 7-0 run erasing the Yellow Jackets' advantage down to two. A three-pointer by Mickayla Perdue got the Lady Pioneers going during the stretch while Deja Atkinson closed out the run. However, West Virginia State started to get into a rhythm training an eight-point advantage before the under-five media timeout. 

Coming out of the timeout WVSU's Shely Harmeyer hit another three to give the Yellow Jackets their first double-digit lead. Once again the Lady Pioneers found a way to get back into the contest. Another 7-0 run by Glenville State made it 38-33 with 2:44 left before halftime. Before the final horn of the second quarter West Virginia State regained a ten-point advantage.

Multiple times throughout the third quarter Glenville made it a two-possession game. For the first two minutes, the Lady Pioneers would be held scoreless until Deja Atkinson scored a jumper from inside the paint. In the waning minutes of the third, the Yellow Jackets were able to take an eleven-point lead. Although GSU started to build some momentum ending the quarter with back-to-back layups.

In the opening minutes of the final quarter of play a jumper by Mickayla Perdue made it a four-point game. The Lady Pioneers were able to hold West Virginia State in check with the Yellow Jackets' largest lead of the quarter only being seven points. An 8-0 run gave GSU their first lead of the game since the opening minutes of the contest. Both squads traded buckets back and forth until the final media timeout.

Coming out of the timeout Breanna Campbell hit a jump shot to continue to swing the momentum in favor of Glenville. West Virginia State was able to answer Campbell's jumper with a layup making it a one-possession game late. During the last three minutes, the Lady Pioneers hit a shooting slump not scoring a single point. A layup by Emyah Fortenberry would be the final blow to Glenville State giving WVSU the advantage 75-74.

Breanna Campbell led Glenville State in scoring with 22 and finished the game with a team-high seven rebounds and six assists. Mickayla Perdue would be the only other Lady Pioneer that was in double figures. Sophomore Deja Atkinson wrapped up the contest with eight points and five rebounds.
