Lady Pioneers Gear Up for Conference Clash Against West Virginia State

Glenville, W.Va. -  Glenville State Women's Basketball team is back on the road before returning home for Winter Homecoming on January 21st. The Lady Pioneers travel to Institute, W.Va. to face the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State. GSU sits one game ahead of West Virginia State in the Mountain East Conference standings.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers 

Historically the matchup has favored Glenville State with the Lady Pioneers winning the last 15. This season's first matchup proved to be a battle with Glenville pulling away late to win 75-70. Since the first meeting in the 2022-23 campaign GSU has posed a record of 12-1.

In the Lady Pioneers' last time out they were able to defeat the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan 61-55. Glenville State would be held to its lowest point total of the season. Saturday's narrow victory marked the third time during the 2022-23 campaign that only two or fewer Lady Pioneers finished the game with double-figures

Coach Stephens's squad continues to be one of the best-pressing teams in all of Division II. On average Glenville State is forcing 29.2 turnovers per contest which is first in the MEC and the nation. 16.4 of the Lady Pioneers' turnovers come from steals ranking GSU third in the country for steals per game. Glenville also has shot the ball from the field well. Through 16 games Glenville State is shooting 43.9% from the field which is second in the conference.

A Look at West Virginia State 

The Yellow Jackets enter Wednesday's contest second in the MEC standings. West Virginia State also sits fourth in the D2Sida Atlantic Regional Poll. Coach Charles Marshall's squad is one the hottest teams in the league winning nine out of their last ten games. During this stretch, the Yellow Jackets defeated their opponent by 20 or more points on three separate occasions. 

West Virginia State is coming off a dominant 112-49 win over Alderson Broaddus University. Just in the first half, WVSU held the Battlers to just 18 points while producing 70. Senior Destiny Fields led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the winning effort. Anysa Jordan finished the contents with a double-double, her fourth of the season.

As a team, the Yellow Jackets have the top-scoring offense in the country producing 90.5 points per game. On average West Virginia State is attempting a conference-high 31.7 three-pointers per game while hitting the third most in the MEC per contest. Similarly to the Lady Pioneers, the WVSU plays at a fast pace pressing whenever they have the opportunity.  The Yellow Jackets are producing a conference-high 16.7 steals per game.
