Pioneers Win Overtime Thriller Over Conference Rivals Fairmont State

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team defeated conference rivals Fairmont State in overtime 85-84. The Pioneers complete the regular season series sweep for the first time since the 2013-14 season. With GSU holding Fonz Hale to one of his lowest point totals of the season and out-rebounding the Falcons 49-45 Glenville was able to come out on top.

GSU trailed early on in the first five minutes of the contest. Isaiah Sanders got Fairmont State's offense going and started a 7-1 run. Harrison Egahan and Jordan Turbo Smith were able to get the Pioneers going scoring the team's first 12 points. Back-to-back buckets from beyond the arc by Smith made it a one-point game.

At the 13:29 mark, Glenville took their first lead of the game with a layup by Jay Scott. Scott's layup from inside the paint sparked an 8-2 run where the Pioneers took their largest lead of the first half 20-15.

However, the contest started to swing in favor of the Falcons coming out of the under-ten media timeout. After a Jumper by Goerge Mangus tied up the game 24-24, Fairmont went on to score the next six points. The Pioneers throughout the remainder of the first half continued to battle slowly shrinking Fairmont State's advantage. With seven seconds left, Freddie Word got to the rim and scored a layup to put GSU up by one.

Throughout the second half, both squads kept battling with neither gaining any substantial lead. The largest advantage of the second half would only be four points. With 7:43 to go the Pioneers lead by four and held on to their lead until the under-five media timeout.

With less than three minutes left, Fairmont State started to swing the momentum in their favor taking the lead 72-68. In the final two minutes, Glenville State answered any advancement made by the Falcons. The Pioneers found themselves trailing by two with 38 ticks left on the clock. After an offensive rebound by Turbo Smith, Jacquez Yow drew contact sending himself to the free-throw line. Yow converted both attempts sending GSU to overtime.

De' Ante Petree hit a deep three putting Glenville on the board early. The Pioneers took advantage of a missed three by Fairmont State to jump out to a five-point lead in the opening minutes. While Glenville State held onto the lead for most of overtime Fairmont State was able to make it a one-point game with 39 seconds left. GSU on their next possession came up empty, but Jacquez Yow came in clutch for the Pioneers with a crucial block in the final seconds to secure the win.

Freddie Word finished the contest with a double-double scoring a team-high 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Junior Jacquez Yow also finished the game with a double-double producing 11 points and ten rebounds. Both Jordan Turbo Smith and Trevor Chandler wrapped up the game with 18 points.
