GSU Men’s Basketball Falls In Close Road Contest Against Frostburg State

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team fell on the road to the Bobcats of Frostburg State 88-83. While the Pioneers made five more threes than Frostburg, the Bobcats won the rebounding battle 35-28. In the second half of tonight's contest, GSU also shot 37.8% from the field.

Glenville was able to strike first with a three-pointer by Jaelin Johnson. On the next possession, Frostburg State answered with a three of their own setting the tone for a back-and-forth first half. Before the first media timeout a jumper by Freddie Word put Glenville State up by three 10-7.

Both squads continued to trade blows but the Pioneers finally created separation at the 10:23 mark. Trevor Chandler's layup concluded a 12-2 run by GSU giving them a nine-point lead. However, quickly the Bobcats made it a one-possession game within the next minute. Glenville had an answer of their own hitting back-to-back threes jumping out to a nine-point advantage. Jaelin Johnson's layup from inside the paint gave Glenville State the largest lead of the contest 31-20.

While there would only be one lead change in the first half, the score was tied on six separate occasions. The Bobcats throughout the remainder of the first half were able to produce the only lead change of the half. Before the under-five media timeout, Frostburg's Juston Bailey hit a three to give FSU their first lead. With the Bobcats continuing to hit shots they took a six-point advantage in the final two minutes. While GSU fought hard to make it a one-possession game a pair of free throws put Frostburg State up 44-40 heading into the half.

Coming out of the half the Bobcat's Vincent Smalls made a layup to regain their six-point advantage. The Pioneers in a matter of minutes were able to regain the lead. Jordan Turbo Smith's shot from beyond the arc at the 18:40 mark was enough to give GSU a slight advantage.

During the remainder of the second half, both squads battle with the largest lead by either being only five points. With Glenville State hitting shots from deep, the Pioneers were able to make it a one-possession game with 3:16 left. After Jaelin Johnson hit another crucial shot for GSU down the stretch Glenville had erased Frostburg's lead down to one. Coach Caldwell's squad forced a turnover getting the ball back for one last shot. With the Pioneers failing to convert the Bobcats were able to come out on top.

Freddie Word led the Pioneers in scoring with 16 and produced ten assists to finish with a double-double. Word was one rebound shy to finish with his second triple-double of the season. Both Jordan Turbo Smith and Jacquez Yow were close behind with 15 points.
