Glenville, W.Va. – Coach Jimmy Mullins and his Glenville State University Pioneer Baseball squad opens their 2023 campaign Saturday afternoon, hosting Lock Haven University out of the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference. The matinee doubleheader will be the first two of eight scheduled games between the Pioneers and foes from the PSAC.
Last season, Glenville rolled to a 35-17 record, posting the largest single season win total in school history. Their dramatic post-season run led them all the way to the MEC title game.
Glenville returns three starters who hit over .300 in '22;
Zach Morris (.360),
Fabian Escalante (.347), and Kalen Kampes (.313). Kampes was second on the team with 10 home runs and 49 RBI's. Centerfielder
Matthew Mangum is the school's all-time leader in stolen bases. Last season, Mangum hit .297, and registered a team-high 18 steals.
Several key starting pitchers return to the staff;
Diego Tamariz posted a 6-1 record and a 3.86 ERA,
Austin Corn (6-3, 5.19),
Julian Minaya (5-1, 4.96), and
Nick Moore (3-1, 5.86). Those four logged 177 innings overall last year, a majority of the innings returning. Tamariz recorded 49 strikeouts in 46.2 innings. Three other returnees provided double-figure innings;
Chase Swain, Chris Thompson, and
Josue Matos. Swain provided two wins and two saves on the mound, and also hit .295 at the plate with three home runs.
Lock Haven returns a nucleus of seniors that posted some solid numbers last season. Third baseman Joe Shannon hit a team-high .350, with outfielder Blaise Zeiders hitting .315. Pitcher David Keller logged 71.1 innings, striking out 70 and recording four wins.
