GLENVILLE – Glenville State's Baseball Team opened their season Saturday at the Sue Morris Complex, battling to a doubleheader split with Lock Haven University. The Pioneers captured Game One 3-1, but the Bald Eagles came back to take Game Two 7-1.
In Game One, the Pioneers rode the tide of three solo home runs to capture the hard-fought 3-1 victory. Long balls were provided by
Fabian Escalante in the first,
Ryan Rodriguez in the fourth, and
Christian Davila in the fifth. Rodriguez and
Luis Liriano provided doubles in the Pioneer seven-hit attack.
Glenville pitching was solid in the opening victory, only giving up three hits. Starter
Diego Tamariz gave up only one run in three and two-thirds innings, with
Chase Swain and
Austin Corn each providing an inning and two-thirds of solid relief. Swain was credited with the win, and Corn the save. Glenville's pitching staff was able to get critical timely outs throughout the day, as nine Lock Haven hitters were left on base.
Lock Haven's Camden Moors connected on a solo shot of his own for the lone Lock Haven tally. Their starter David Keller was solid as well, striking out seven in four innings, and only allowing two runs.
In Game Two, Lock Haven received four innings of one-hit shutout pitching from starter Kevin Worek to spearhead the victory. He struck out six while walking only one. Glenville's lone run came off the bat of Escalante, who drilled his second solo home run of the day in the sixth inning.
Mason Lohr and
Josh Cline recorded the other Pioneer hits.
Glenville returns to action next weekend, hosting Mansfield, another PSAC foe for a weekend three-game set. First pitch of Game One will be Saturday at 1:00 at the Sue Morris Complex.
