Wheeling, W.Va. – Glenville's #5 ranked Lady Pioneers rallied for a critical comeback victory on Saturday afternoon, coming back from a 16-point deficit to post an 81-74 victory over the Wheeling Cardinals. Guard
Breanna Campbell hit an array of shots through the comeback, leading all GSU scorers with 35 points. She also posted a team-high seven assists and six rebounds.
Early on, it was all Wheeling. The Cardinals scored the game's first nine points, and continued to extend that lead through most of the first half. Midway through the second quarter, the lead had been pushed to 40-24. Fortunately, the Lady Pioneers, they were able to materialize a key 13-3 run to close the half, cutting the margin to a manageable six-point gap at intermission, 43-37.
Glenville carried this momentum into the third quarter, opening the stanza with a 15-4 surge, taking a 54-47 lead. Wheeling responded, and by the end of the quarter, the Lady Pioneer lead was cut to 60-57.
Early in the fourth quarter, Wheeling utilized a 10-4 surge to regain the lead 67-64. Fortunately for the Lady Pioneer Faithful, Glenville responded quickly, scoring the next nine points and gaining separation. They were able to pull away down the stretch to secure the victory.
Campbell was complemented by
Mickayla Perdue with with 12 points and
Chalon Miles with seven.
Wheeling's star inside player Lauren Calhoun put up another big game, posting a line of 36 points and nine rebounds.
Wheeling won the team rebounding battle 37-25, but the Lady Pioneers were able to offset that by connecting on nine three-pointers, compared to only three by Wheeling. For the game, Glenville shot 50.0% from the field (31-of-62).
With the win, Glenville maintains their two-game lead in the Mountain East Conference standings. They are now 22-2 overall, and 16-2 in the MEC. Wheeling falls to 12-12 overall, and 10-8 in the MEC. This was career victory #180 for Coach
