Lady Pioneers Looking to Extend Seven-Game Winning Streak Against D&E

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team is set to host the Senators of Davis and Elkins College. With the Lady Pioneers sitting atop the D2Sida Atlantic Region Poll, Coach Stephens's squad is in a prime position to host the regional once again. In the Mountain East Conference standings, GSU with four games left holds a two-game advantage.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

The Lady Pioneers have already faced the Senators once this season and came out on top 94-60. GSU's win in early January was a part of the 12-game winning streak. In the winning Glenville made 14 threes and forced a season-high 41 turnovers. 

In Glenville State's last time out they were able to complete the comeback against the Cardinals of Wheeling University. Pioneer Athlete of the Week Breanna Campbell had a strong performance producing 35 points. Saturday also marked the second time in her career Campbell has gone off for 30 or more points. The Junior Guard led the team in assists with seven and grabbed a team-high six rebounds

While the Lady Pioneers are known for their press they have taken care of the ball at a high level. On average Glenville is only turning over the ball 16.2 times per game which is first in the MEC. With Coach Stephens's squad limiting turnovers and distributing the ball well, the Lady Pioneers have the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the conference.

  • 31.5: Breanna Campbell was on a tear last week averaging 31.5 points per contest.
  • 2.32: Hya Haywood has averaged the third most steals in the conference
  • 15.3: The Lady Pioneers sit second in the league and 15th in the nation for offensive rebounds per game.

A Look at the Senators

Since the first meeting, the Senators have picked up wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and Alderson Broaddus. While D&E has only produced two wins since then they have had three contests decided by ten or fewer points. One of these losses came against the University of Charleston which is tied for second in the league standings.

In the Senator's last time out they fell to the University of Charleston Golden Eagles 72-68. D&E trailed after the first quarter but a strong second and third quarters shrunk the deficit down to one. Ellie Wilkerson led the team in scoring with 21 points. 

Davis and Elkins have been a solid defensive team throughout the 2022-23 season. On average D&E is producing 3.3 blocks per game which is third in the conference. The Senators are holding opposing offenses to 38.8% from the field ranking them second in the MEC. Davis and Elkins also have been one of the best rebounding teams in the league grabbing 42.17 per game.
