Pioneers Fall to the Senators In a Close Battle 73-70

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team fell in a close one to the Senator's at the buzzer. While the Pioneers out-rebounded D&E 48-39, GSU could not take care of the ball. Glenville committed 18 turnovers which lead to 24 points for Coach Mondragon's squad.

Coach Caldwell's squad was able to swing the momentum in their favor early on scoring the first four points. The Pioneers scored a quick layup and hit a jumper from inside the paint. Before the first media timeout, Davis and Elkins went on a 10-2 run. With the Senator's offense finding its rhythm GSU found itself trailing 10-6.

The first half proved to be a low-scoring affair with both teams playing strong defense. Around the ten-minute mark, both squads had only combined for 30 points. A slew of threes by the Pioneers later on in the half helped GSU take their first lead since the early minutes. Jaelin Johnson, Jamarvious Jones, and Jordan Turbo Smith all made shots from beyond the arc.

Before the last final media timeout of the half, both offenses hit a standstill with neither team scoring for two minutes. Glenville continued to battle and eventually tied it up 25-25. However, with 1:30 left the Senators quickly jumped out to an eight-point advantage. The Pioneers would make a four-point game but DJ Henderson's layup put D&E up six heading into the half.

Coming out of the half GSU was able to take their largest lead of the night 51-45. With the Pioneers forcing turnovers and grabbing rebounds, Glenville was able to get high-quality looks in transition. The Senators made it a one-possession game, a layup by Trevor Chandler and a fast break dunk by Freddie Word helped GSU hold on to their six-point advantage.

The final ten minutes proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Neither squad was able to build anything larger than a one possession lead. Twice in the final of tonight's contest the Senators took a three point advantage. After a missed free throw by D&E's Alexander Jordan, Jordan Turbo Smith hit a huge three for the Pioneers tying it up 70-70 with 16 seconds left. However, Sam Rolle IV had the final dagger hitting a three from the top of the key. GSU would have one more chance but it would be no good.

Jordan Turbo Smith finished the game with a team-high 19 points and produced three steals. Junior Guard Freddie Word was effective on both ends scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the 2022-23 season. Jacquez Yow was the third and final Pioneer in double figures with 13. Yow finished tonight's contest with a game-high five offensive rebounds.
