Pioneer Baseball Continues Home Stretch against Mansfield

Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville State Baseball is back in action this weekend at the Sue Morris Sports Complex to face Mansfield University. While the Pioneers have a couple of games under their belt, Mansfield will start the 2023 campaign Saturday. The Mountaineers are coming off a historic 2022 season.

A Look at Your Pioneers 
 
Game one of Saturday's doubleheader marks the seventh meeting between the two squads. Last season the Pioneers went 3-1 against Mansfield helping them build their impressive record against PSAC opponents. Glenville was able to produce runs in last year's four-game series scoring 25 over the two-day period.

In Glenville State's last timeout, Fabian Escalante had a great opening weekend.  The Senior went 2-6 and had two home runs. Chase Swain picked up his first win of the season and Austin Corn got his first save.

Early on the Pioneers have a team ERA of 3.86 which is second out of the four teams in the conference that have started their season. While GSU had four home runs last weekend Coach Mullins's squad is batting .217. However, some of Glenville's top hitters from last season like Calen Kampes and Chase Swain are still looking for their first hits of the 2023 campaign.

GSU by the Numbers
  • 3: The Pioneers had three home runs in a season opener for the second time since the revival of the program. 
  • 1: Christian Divila hit his first career home run in the first game against Lock Haven.
  • .400: Ryan Rodriguez through two games has the best batting average on the team.
  • 3.2: Junior Diego Tamariz went 3.2 innings in his first start of the season. 
  • 7: Luis Liriano had his first career hit as a Pioneer against Lock Haven.
 
A Look at The Mountaineers 
 
Mansfield University Baseball is coming off a strong 2022 season with the first 20-win season in over five years. They were voted #7 in the East PSAC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll. The Mountaineers also had their highest win total since the 2013 season.

Head Coach Andrew Chalot enters his fourth season under the helm. While the Mountaineers lost ten seniors, 30 student-athletes return from last season's squad. Coach Chalot's full coaching staff returns as well. Mansfield will be losing their top hitter from last season Assaf Lowengart who hit .356.

MU by the Numbers 
  • .473: Brittain Shander led the Mountaineers in on-base percentage last season.
  • 6.97: Coach Chalot's squad had the 13th-best team ERA in the conference last year.
  • 83: Mansfield committed the most errors in the PSAC during the 2022 campaign.
  • 4: Austin Lewis returns for his sophomore season and led the Mountaineers in saves.
  • 49: Brittain Shander had the fourth most hits on the team during the 2022-23 campaign.
