Lady Pioneers Host the University of Charleston in Crucial MEC Matchup

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team is back in the Waco Center for their final home conference game. The Lady Pioneers are set to face the University of Charleston Golden Eagles who sit two games back in the Mountain East Conference standings. With a win on Wednesday GSU can lock up the #1 seed for the conference tournament and clinch the MEC regular season title.

A Look at the Lady Pioneers 

Glenville State has already faced the Golden Eagles once this season in their second conference game of the season. The two powerhouses of the MEC battled it out in Charleston but the Lady Pioneers fell 79-70. Glenville did have four fewer turnovers than UC and kept the rebound battle close. However, UC would shoot 45.5% from beyond the arc. 

In the Lady Pioneers' last time out they were able to defeat West Virginia Wesleyan picking up their ninth straight win. While GSU shot 30.9% from the field, Glenville was able to manufacture almost thirty more attempts than the Bobcats. Mickayla Perdue led Glenville State in scoring with 21 points.

Coach Stpehens's squad continued to be one the top offensive-rebounding teams in the country and the conference. On average the Lady Pioneers are grabbing 15.2 offensive rebounds per contest which is second in the MEC and 17th in the nation. Glenville's press throughout the 2022-23 season has helped them win the turnover battle. The Lady Pioneers are forcing 28.0 turnovers a game ranking them first in the country.

A Look at the University of Charleston

Since the first meeting back in November the Golden Eagles have only lost four games. Three of their four losses were decided by 10 or fewer points. The University of Charleston is 8-2 in their last ten games.

Coach Kelly's Golden Eagles are coming off a 100-64 victory over Alderson Broaddus. In the win against the Battlers UC hit a season-high 15 threes on 39.5% shooting. Dakota Reeves, Sierra Davis, and Markiya McCormick all made three or more shots from beyond the arc. Reeves led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 17 points.

UC has been one of the better defensive teams in the conference this season. The Golden Eagles are holding opponents to 64.5 points per game which is first in the MEC. Opponents are shooting 39.2% from the field and 30.1% from three. Charleston has shot the ball well from beyond the arc. Though 26 games Coach Kelly's squad is making eight threes per game.
