Pioneer Baseball Back in Action Hosting the MEC/PSAC Classic

Glenville, W.Va. - Pioneer Baseball is back this weekend hosting the MEC/PSAC Classic at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. Two nationally ranked opponents will be making the trip to the Sue. Coach Mullins's squad will be going against the #18 Millersville University, D'Youville, and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

A Look at the Pioneers

Glenville State is coming off a successful weekend against Mansfield University where the Pioneers took two out of three games. At last year's MEC/PSAC Classic GSU was able to go 3-0 picking up impressive wins against Mercyhurst and Millersville. During the three-day tournament, Glenville produced two shutouts.

Through five games GSU has had a team ERA of 4.50 which is second in the Mountain East Conference. While the Pioneers are only hitting .203 as a team, they have hit the second-most home runs in the conference. The Glenville State bullpen is holding opponents to a .219 batting average.

  • 2: Fabian Escalante and Ryan Rodriguez sit first in the MEC for home runs this season. 
  • 34: GSU's bullpen ranks third in the conference for strikeouts.
  • 5: Senior Zach Morris leads the Pioneers in RBIs so far this season. 

A look at the Mountain Cats

Pitt-Johnstown enters Friday's contest with a (2-1) overall record. So far this season the UPJ has faced Concord University in a three-game series. While the Mountain Cats allowed 17 runs in the first contest, they would bounce back in the next two. During the next two games, UPJ put up 35 runs.

While the Mountain Cats have only played three games this season they are fifth in the PSAC for runs. UPJ as a team is hitting .362 ranking them second in their conference. After allowing 17 runs to Concord in the first game, Pitt Johnstown has the second-worst team ERA in the PSAC and the second-highest opponent batting average. 

UPJ by the Numbers
  • 3: Dylan Broderick sits second in the PSAC for home runs this season. 
  • 4: Sophomore Rodney Shultz leads the Mountain Cats in strikeouts so far during the 2023 campaign.
  • 2.33: Alex Glumac ranks tenth in Division II for RBIs per game. 

A look at the Saints

D'Youville is coming off a (14-22) season. During the 2022 campaign, the Saints hit 18 home runs and had a .386 on-base percentage. Coach McLain's squad has only faced one opponent this year. To start off the season the Saints faced Mercyhurst and fell 5-2 on the road.

The Saints return their top hitter from last season Ethan Hammond. Hammond a native of Oakville, Ontario had a batting average of .394 and drove in 23 runs. So far this season Hammond is one of the Saints that have recorded a hit. 


D'Youville by the Numbers
  • 7: In Chris Auclair's season debut he recorded seven strikeouts in four innings.
  • 2: D'Youville's bullpen has already allowed two home runs this season.
  • .125: The Saints have a team batting average of .125 so far this season.

A look at the Marauders

Millersville has already played ten games this season and has gone (7-3) so far. As a team, the Marauders have a 2.59 ERA which is the second lowest in the PSAC. However, they are almost allowing one home run per game. MU has also had success with the long ball this year hitting eight home runs.

So far this season John Seibert has been the Marauder's best hitter with 17 hits which is the most in the PSAC. Seibert a sophomore from Lititz, Pa. also has been an effective base runner with five steals in five attempts. Pitch Carson Kulina has been Millersville's best pitcher so far. In three appearances Kulina has stuck out a conference-high 17 strikeouts.

MU by the Numbers 
  • .511: Taylor Bren has one of the best on-base percentages on the team. 
  • 5: Five or more Millersville pitchers have recorded ten or more strikeouts.
  • 8: In their win against Chowan Carson Kulina had eight strikeouts.
