Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville's Softball opened their 2023 in grand fashion Saturday, getting two complete game pitching performances from their starting pitchers. In Game One, GSU utilized a two-hit shutout from veteran
Holly Brehm to defeat Clarion 3-0. In Game Two, freshman
Kylie Burdick went the distance, leading a 6-2 victory over Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
GAME ONE
Brehm was dominant, striking out 15 Eagle hitters, while walking only two. She carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
Glenville staked a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as freshman Shelby McDaniels delivered a two-RBI double to the left centerfield gap. She scored
Ashton Palmer who had led off with a double, and
Addison Aguiniga who had walked. An insurance run crossed in the Lady Pioneer sixth as Kylie Goodman scored a manufactured run to close the scoring. Goodman opened with a single, and one later, scored on a sacrifice fly from fellow freshman
Emma McLean. This provided all of the offense needed for Brehm.
Kaelyn Stenger also added a single for the GSU attack.
Glenville went to 1-0 with the opening win, while Clarion fell to 1-2.
GAME TWO
Burdick recorded a complete-game of her own to complete the successful afternoon. She scattered six hits over and only allowed the two runs, both earned. She walked three and struck out six Crimson Hawks in the win.
Senior catcher Katie Richardson got the GSU offense going in the first, belting a two-run home run to dead center. IUP answered in the following half inning, Tess Smiley singling home Paige Truax. Glenville pushed the lead back to two in the next frame, extending the lead to 3-1. Goodman opened with a double, and later scored on an IUP infield error.
This advantage remained until the fourth, when Glenville pushed across three valuable insurance runs. McDaniels, Stenger, and McLean all produced hits in the inning and crossed with the critical runs. Stenger's was a line drive double to the corner. Richardson was two-for-four to lead the seven-hit Pioneer attack. Lu Kisner also added a single.
Glenville improved to 2-0 with the win, with IUP falling to 2-1.
This was the first two of four GSU weekend games against PSAC foes in the tournament. Glenville is back in action Sunday morning, hosting Seton Hill. They close their portion of the tournament in a 12:30 contest against Slippery Rock.
