TIFFIN – Glenville's Wrestling team made some monumental history Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Super Regional III in Tiffin, Ohio. Coach
Dylan Cottrell's squad collected three individual regional champions, and five NCAA National Qualifiers in all.
Gavin Quiocho started the qualifying for the Pioneers, wrestling his way to the title in the 133-pound division, defeating Vincent Scollo of West Liberty 3-1…avenging his last second loss at the MEC Championships. This was followed by teammate
Ethan Hardy battling through the lower bracket to take a third place finish at 141. Guy Deleonardis joined his teammate Quiocho with a trip to the top of the podium, wrestling to the victory at 165. He defeated Ashland's Drew Wiechers 9-8 in one of the day's most exciting matches.
Moving on to 184, Glenville's
Cole Houser punched another ticket to the D-II Nationals. Like Hardy, Houser battled with a pair of wins on the left side of the bracket to take home a third place finish. The exclamation point came at the end of the day, with Glenville's
Jared Campbell, the #3 Heavyweight in the nation, taking the individual title with an 8-5 victory over West Liberty's Francesco Borsellino.
In all, the Pioneers won all three finals, qualified five, and put seven of eight wresters into the placing rounds. Incredibly, there will be five Pioneers competing at the NCAA Nationals in only the third year of the program's resurrection.
The NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships are set for March 10-11 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
