Glenville’s Strong Guard Play Leads the Lady Pioneers Past the Hilltoppers

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball where able to defeat the Hilltoppers of West Liberty 86-61 with strong performances from Mickyla Perdue and Breanna Campbell. While the Lady Pioneers entered the half with a ten-point advantage, Coach Stephens's squad was able to hold one of the conference's top offenses in check during the final two quarters. Glenville held the Hilltoppers to a new season low from beyond the arc with West Liberty only shooting 20%

With the Lady Pioneers missing their first three attempts WLU was able to jump out to a quick four-point lead. Mickayla Perdue was able to kickstart Glenville's offense with a layup inside the paint. Perdue's layup also was a beginning of a 15-4 run. Breanna Campbell, Cabria Lewis, and Kamiyah Lyons all contributed during the stretch. 

Coming out of the first media timeout both offenses hit a cold stretch. In the final five minutes of the first quarter, both squads combined for ten points. A layup by Mickayla Perdue capped off a productive first quarter putting GSU up 20-14.

Twice in the second quarter, the Hilltoppers would make it a one-possession game. While West Liberty would only hit four shots from the field, they were effective at getting to the charity stripe. WLU shot 88.8% from the free-throw line only missing one attempt. The Lady Pioneers closed out the quarter on a small run to take a ten-point advantage before heading into halftime. Glenville produced six of the final eight points in the final two minutes.  

While West Liberty would strike first in the third quarter, another run by GSU propelled the Lady Pioneers to take a 15-point advantage. After Glenville was held to zero threes in the second they came out in hit three in the third quarter. In the final two quarters, Coach Stephens's squad shot 37.5% from beyond the arc. Once again the Lady Pioneers' offense started to click at the end of the quarter propelling them to take an 18-point advantage. 

Glenville in the final quarter of play continued to build their advantage. While West Liberty continued to score and started to find their rhythm from deep, GSU's offensive production carried over from the third. Before the final horn, the Lady Pioneers took the lead 86-61.

Junior guards Mickayla Perdue and Breanna Campbell had monster performances for Glenville State. Perdue the back-to-back MEC Player of the Week had a 30-point performance with Campbell close behind with 28. While Hya Haywood contributed on the offensive end with two points, the Evansville, Ind. native had a team and game-high four steals.
