Pioneers Split Sunday Doubleheader with Tiffin University

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville completed their four-game series against the Dragons of Tiffin University split Sunday's doubleheader. The Pioneers fell to Tiffin 13-4 in the first game and won game two 6-4 in dramatic fashion. In today's two games, Brandon Layne was lights out for GSU going 3-6 from the plate and recording four RBIs. 

Game One Glenville State 4, Tiffin 13

Throughout the early portion of the first half of the doubleheader, both squads got the bats going early combining for eight runs. Tiffin at the top of the first got three runs on the board with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly to right center field. 

In the bottom half of the inning, the Pioneers shrunk the Dragon's lead down to one. Glenville loaded up the bases with no outs with two walks and a single up the middle by Zach Bayor. GSU got their first run on the board with a Matthew Mangum walk. Then a sacrifice fly by Fabian Escalante scored Bayer. 

However, Tiffin's bats continued to stay hot in the second inning. The Dragons were able to add three more runs having success with the long ball. Dawson Groch hit a two-run shot to center field and a deep single to center field stretched Tiffin's lead back to three.  

Jose Matos coming in to relive Chase Swain gave the Pioneers three solid innings holding the Dragon's offense in check. At the bottom of the fourth Glenville once again cut into Tiffin's lead. Brandon Layne with his first career home run drove in two runs for GSU. 

During the final three innings, the Dragon's bats continued to stay hot producing seven runs. Tiffin would drive five of their seven runs from homers. In the fifth Ty Hatfield hit a two-run shot and in the 7th Hilario DeLaPaz hit a three-run shot.

Both Mathew Mangum and Brandon Layne finished the contest with two hits. Mangum also recorded a stolen base for the Pioneers and recorded one RBI. 

Game Two Glenville State 6, Tiffin 4

In game two Glenville was able to get on the board first producing a run in the first and second inning while only recording two hits. The Pioneers took advantage of early errors made by the Dragons. Ryan Rodriguez on a sacrifice fly scored GSU's first run followed by Matthew Mangum scoring on a drop third strike in the second. 

At the top of the fourth Tiffin tied the contest 2-2 producing two runs. After a flyout to second Griffin Stevens hit a solo home run for the dragons. With a single to right field scoring the tying run, Nick Moore would be brought in from the bullpen for the Pioneers. Moore stuck out the next batter looking and got Glenville out of the inning. 

The Dragons struck again in the top of the sixth taking the lead 4-2. A lead-off triple put a runner in scoring position for Tiffin. Hilario DeLaPaz doubled to right field scored and put another runner on third. A sacrifice fly to deep center toward the end of the inning would be the final blow.

Glenville was able to load the basses taking advantage of two walks and a hit-by-pitch. The Pioneers were able to score their first run of the sixth with a walk. With GSU having speed on the basses with Ryan Mangum on third,  the Mint Hill, N.C. native was able to score on a wild pitch score. After the wild pitch, Brandon Layne singled to right field driving in two runs that decided the game. 

Andrew O'Dea picked up the win for the Pioneers. With back-to-back batters getting on base, Tiffin started to put runners in scoring position. The Pioneers were able to string three consecutive outs to hold onto the win.
