Pioneer Baseball Starts Conference Play at Home Against Fairmont and Frostburg State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball starts conference play this weekend against Fairmont State and Frostburg State. In the Mountain East Conference Baseball Preseason Poll The Bobcats were picked first and the Falcons were selected second in the north division. Last season the Pioneers spilt both regular season series.

A Look at the Pioneers

The Pioneers are coming off a weekend series to Tiffin University. In the last game of the four-game series, Glenville was able to pick up a win. Senior Brandon Layne during the final two games against the Dragons went 3-6 from the plate. The Catlettsburg, Ky. native recorded his first career home run.

Through the non-conference slate, GSU's bullpen has been towards the top of the MEC. The Pioneers sit third in the league for strikeouts with 133 through 17 games. Glenville also has posted the most shutouts in the conference. While the bats have struggled to get going Coach Mullins's, the long ball has been there for the Pioneers. GSU is tied for fourth in the MEC for home runs.

A Look at the Falcons

Since starting the 2023 campaign with a 4-3 win over Salem University, the Falcons have dropped 12 straight. During the non-conference portion of the season, the bats for Fairmont State have struggled to hit going .183 from the plate. The Falcons have been shut out on four separate occasions this season.  

Fairmont is coached by Matt Yurish who enters his second season under the helm. In Coach Yurish's first season with the program, four Falcons received four All-MEC selections. Out of the four selections two return for Fairmont, honorable mentions Connor Cramer and Vince Sabatino.

  • .292: Vince Sabatino leads the Falcons in batting average this season. 
  • 15: Fairmont State has allowed the third most home runs in the MEC.
  • 16: The Falcons have committed the third fewest errors in the conference.

A Look at the Bobcats

Frostburg State enters Monday's contest on a three-game losing streak. The Bobcats before a three-game series with Lee started the year (7-3). Frostburg is coached by Anthony Williams who enters his fourth year with the Bobcats. Coach Williams's squad has been one of the better hitting and pitching teams in the conference.

Through 13 games Forstburg has the lowest team ERA in the MEC with a 4.18. The Bobcat's bullpen has only allowed 10 home runs while striking out 137 batters. As a team, Frostburg State is batting .279 which is third in the league. While the Bobcats have only recorded seven home runs they have 128 hits.

  • 24: Junior Max Proctor leads the Bobcats bullpen in strikeouts this season. 
  • .364: Senior Trevor Jones ranks 15th in the MEC for batting average.
