Pioneer Baseball Drops Doubleheader to the Bobcats of Frostburg State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Pioneers continued Mountain East Conference play against the Bobcats of Frostburg State. While Glenville fell 17-4 in the first game, GSU battled in the second game of the doubleheader. The Pioneers would have a strong outing from Chase Swain but a late run by the Bobcats completed the sweep.

Game One Glenville State 4 Frostburg State 17

Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings. Frostburg State got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Shertzer's single to right field drove in the first run. The Bobcats before the end of the inning put up four more runs making it 5-0.

Halfway through the contest, the Pioneer's offense started to get going. At the bottom of the fourth Ryan Rodriguez hit a double to left center field. Zach Bayor hit his first home run of the season scoring Rodriguez making it 5-2. Bayor finished the first game with a team-high three hits.

In the top sixth Glenville got two more runs on the board with a Matthew Mangum double to left field. However, the bats continued to stay hot for Frostburg. During the final three innings of the contest, the Bobcats produced 12 runs.

Game Two Glenville State 2 Frostburg State 3

Frostburg started game two of the doubleheader with a two-run homer at the top of the first inning. The Pioneers would tie it 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Matthew Mangum got on base by a hit-by-pitch. After the next two Pioneers stuck out Ryan Rodriguez hit a triple to left center scoring Mangum. During Fabsin Escalante's at-bat, a wild pitch scored the tying run.

Throughout the remainder of the contest, both squads were locked into a pitcher's dual. Chase Swain got the start for the Pioneers and shut down the Bobcat's bats for most of the contest. After giving up the home run in the first, Swain rattled off seven straight strikeouts. The senior from Ravenswood, W.Va. finished the contest with 12 strikeouts.

Frostburg State would break the scoring drought in the top of the seventh. With two outs Mikey Guy hit a solo home run to left center field. Colby Howatneck was brought out of the bullpen to pick up the final out of the inning. To start off the bottom half of the inning Calen Kampes singled to right field. Kampes was able to advance to second on a sacrifice by Zach Morris. With the Bobcats getting two consecutive outs, the Pioneers fell just short of making the comeback.

The Pioneers will be on the road this weekend traveling to Alderson Broaddus University and Notre Dame College.
