Pioneer Baseball Splits Sunday Series With the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHILIPPI, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball split Sunday's doubleheader with the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus. The Pioneers throughout the season have struggled at the plate but produced a total of 17 runs. GSU would fall late to the Battlers in game one but bounced back in game two.

The PIoneers were able to get on the board first at the top of the second. Fabian Escalante started off the inning with a single to right field. Escalante finished game one a perfect 3-3. With Glenville getting baserunners early a Zach Morris double made it 1-0. Before the end of the inning, GSU scored two more runs increasing their advantage to three.

In the bottom half of the second, AB's offense got going as well and matched the Pioneer's three runs. The Battlers got scored two runs late in the inning with a double. After the double Alderson Broaddus put another one on the board off if an error. 

The bats for Glenville continued to stay hot producing six runs throughout the next two innings. Zack Morris picked up his second RBI on the day on a single to the infield. Carlos De Jesus also produced another RBI. While the Battlers scored four runs in the fourth Glenville headed into the fifth up 9-7

AB Down the stretch continued to put runs on the board. At the bottom of the fifth, the Battlers scored a run on a sacrifice fly making it a one-run game. Alderson Broaddus was able to pull away late. After another sacrifice fly tied the contest 9-9, the Battlers walked it off on an infield single.

While Glenville got on the board first with a Zach Laurie single, AB would lead early. With the Battlers hitting two home runs in the first three innings they had the advantage 4-2. Chase Swain's homer in the third gave the Pioneers their second run. 

Glenville State shifted the momentum in their favor with a huge fourth inning. The Pioneers started out the inning with back-to-back outs. Masin Lohr got GSU going with a single to left field. Lohr would take advantage of a throwing error by the Battlers to reach third on a stolen base attempt. While Matthew Mangum struck out he was able to reach first on a passed ball that scored Lohr. Fabian Escalante with a double gave Glenville the lead and his first RBI of the series. 

The Pioneers were able able to add insurance runs in the final two innings. In the top of the sixth Spencer Blackburn hit a two-run shot making it 7-4. Blackburn's homer would be his first of the 2023 season and the second of his career. Alderson Broaddus did score in the sixth but Carlos De Jesus had the answer with a solo shot. 

Glenville State Baseball will be back in action tomorrow against the Flacons of Notre Dame College.
