Glenville State Softball Narrowly Defeats the Mountain Lions In Both Contests

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Softball came out on top in two close battles defeating the Mountain Lions of Concord University. The Lady Pioneers are now (5-5) in Mountain East Conference play. With stellar defensive performances and solid outings on the mound, GSU was able to complete the sweep.

Game One Glenville State 1 Concord 0

Glenville's Holly Brehm and Concord's Caitlyn Bauer were looked into a duel until the very end of the contest. After a lead-off single up the middle by Ashton Palmer, the Lady Pioneers would not have another base runner until the bottom of the sixth. While the Mountain Lions had three hits GSU's defense stood strong.

In the Bottom of the sixth Glenville had a strong opportunity to put the game's first run on the board. GSU lead off the inning with a walk and eventually loaded the bases with one out. With a strikeout and a ground out to third, the bases were left full.

Holly Brehm got the start for the Lady Pioneers and pitched seven innings while striking out six batters. During the bottom of the seventh Glenville had a strong chance to walk it off. Two of GSU's hits came in the seventh putting runners on first and third. Glenville attempted a sacrifice but would be called out for batting out of turn.

Freshman Kiely Burdick was brought in to relieve Brehm. Burdick produced three straight outs to get the Lady Pioneers out of the inning. In the bottom half of the frame before any outs were recorded Glenville loaded the basses. Katelyn Richardson scored the game-winning run on a hit-by-pitch.

Game Two Glenville State 2 Concord 1

The Lady Pioneers in game two got on the board early. At the bottom of the first, a solo shot to center field by Katelyn Richardson made 1-0. Glenville produced another run in the third doubling their lead. Kylie Goodman started the inning with a double to left center. The freshman was able to reach third on a wild pitch. Haylee Stevens drove in Goodman with a single to the outfield.

Concord on their next at-bat cut into GSU's advantage shrinking it down to one. After a single down the line, CU's Choli Casto came in to pinch run. Casto during her time as a runner stole two bases. A single in the infield would score her with only one out.  Once again the Lady Pioneers' defense stood strong. While Emma McLean went 0-3 from the plate, she made three incredible diving catches stopping more runs from scoring.

With both offenses going cold in the final three innings GSU held on to win 2-1. Kylie Burdick pitched a complete game for the Lady Pioneers and picked up her sixth win of the season.

Glenville State Softball will be back in action this weekend at the Sue Morris Sports Complex.
