Lady Pioneer Softball Splits Doubleheader with Concord University

Athens, W.Va. - Glenville State Softball split this afternoon's doubleheader with the Mountain Lions of Concord University. Game One would be a tight one with both pitchers bullying the opposing team's offense. In the second half of the doubleheader, the Lady Pioneers' bats caught fire leading to a 7-3 win.

Game One Glenville State 0 Concord 1

Senior Holly Brehm got the start for the Lady Pioneers and once again was dominant. In her eight innings of work, Brehm stuck out 11 batters. The Mullens, W.Va. native had a no-hitter going through six innings. With runs and hits at a premium Holly's performance helped GSU battle in a close contest.

Early on in the first contest, the Lady Pioneers had an opportunity to score. Emma McLean reached first with a hit-by-pitch. Katelyn Richardson's single to center field advanced McLean to second but she would be thrown out at third. Through the first three innings GSU on three separate occasions had runners on first and second.

During the top of the sixth Glenville had a strong chance to break the 0-0 tie. While the Mountian Lions produced two quick outs, Shelby McDaniels reached first with a single through the left side. Makenna Negley's single to the outfield put runners on first and second once again. Concord in the bottom half of the frame also had an opportunity to get on the board. The Mountain Lions before the Lady Pioneers could not record two outs had runners in scoring position. With GSU's defense getting the runner out on first and Brehm striking out one of CU's better hitters, Glenville got out of the inning.

The first game of the doubleheader would go into extra innings. Glenville State in the eighth and ninth innings would have the winning run on second. However, in the bottom of the ninth Concord with no outs had runners on second and third. The Mountain Lions scored the game-winning run on a fielder's choice.

Game Two Glenville State 8 Concord  3

Out of the gate, the Lady Pioneers were able to get on the board early. After Ashton Palmer led off the inning with a walk, Emma McLean homered making it 2-0. Before the Mountain Lions could get on the board GSU had a four-run advantage. Concord was able to answer Glenville's early two-run homer. At the bottom of the second, the Mountain Lions had a two-run shot of their own.

The Lady Pioneers continued to produce runs throughout the contest. GSU scored at least one run during the first four innings. The only two innings that Coach Scoone's squad did not score were the fifth and seventh. While Concord got on the board in the fifth inning, it did not phase the Lady Pioneers. Freshman Kylie Burdick picked up her tenth win of the season.
Emma McLean finished the contest a perfect 3-3. Shelby Mcdaniels led Glenville in RBIs with four and produced two hits. Kaelyn Stenger also finished the game with two hits.
