Glenville State Softball Falls in Doubleheader to Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. - Glenville State Softball was back on the road against Frostburg State University. Both contests of this afternoon's doubleheader were battles with each being decided late. History would also be made during the first half of the doubleheader. Holly Brehm broke the program's record for the most career strikeouts.

Through the first inning, both sides would be held scoreless. The Bobcats broke the scoring drought in the second frame. Frostburg loaded the bases with three straight singles before GSU could record an out. The Bobcats had back-to-back hits to the outfield making it 2-0. Glenville got out of the inning with three straight outs limiting the damage. 

The Lady Pioneers had a solid opportunity in the fourth to finally get on the board. Makenna Negley early on in the frame got on base with a single. While a fielder's choice got the second out of the inning GSU still had a runner on first. Kaelyn Stenger's single put a runner in scoring position for the first time in three innings. However, the Bobcats produced the final out of the inning. 

Glenville's Holly Brehm made history in the bottom half of the fourth. The Senior picked up her 365th career strikeout at GSU breaking the previous record. 

Frostburg State in the bottom of the fifth would score one more run making it 3-0. The Lady Pioneers during the final two innings could not cut into Frosburg's advantage.

In the second half of this afternoon's doubleheader, the Bobcats once again scored first. Kylie Burdick after giving up the initial run was lights out for the Lady Pioneers. For five consecutive innings, Forstburg was held scoreless. 

The bats for Glenville started to find their rhythm much sooner. At the top of the fourth, the Lady Pioneers had runners in scoring position with hits from Kaelyn Stenger and Makenna Negley. However, a run would not cross in the fourth inning for GSU.

Later on in the sixth frame Glenville quickly erased Frostburg State's advantage. The Lady Pioneers lead off the inning with back-to-back singles by Emma McLean and Kaelyn Stenger. Sophomore Makenna Negley drove in McLean and Stenger with a single to the outfield. 

Frostburg State in the seventh found a way to tie it up. Glenville would get two outs rather quickly. A triple by the Bobcats put the tying run on third. On a past ball, Frostburg State scored the tying. The Lady Pioneers got the third out forcing extra innings.

Both squads were held scoreless until the tenth inning. At the beginning of the frame, a runner would be placed on second. Glenville with Ashton Palmer's single down the line took the lead 3-2. The Bobcats with a solid defensive effort got the final two outs. Frostburg in the bottom half of the frame got a second baserunner with a hit-by-pitch. FSU walked it off with a three-run homer taking the contest 5-3.
